sexkitten Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 I really miss Doug's daily trip reports. I'm so behind that I didn't even know they opened Switchback. Anyone who's been up please, please, please post a current TR. BTW, see you all on Saturday morning. Quote
toast21602 Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 everything will be opened. everything will be groomed. race on razors. all rules still apply to sidewinder... skis off to get in, experts only, smartstyle. get there early because its going to get packed because of the race and whatnot. pipe should be open and should be awesome. Johnny Style Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 It was real nice this morning. Bluebird, crisp, good conditions. Both the six pack and the quad were running so I barely took a chair up with another person. Those kids racing today were the best in the state and they could really rip. It was fun watching the race. And in true Doug fashion, I left the parking lot at 12:30 p.m. to a pleasant mix of 80s thrash bands on the ipod. (Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament). I pit stopped at McDonalds for a #2 combo meal and then I was off for the quick ride down the turnpike. Got home, waxed 'em up, and am ready for dawn patrol tomorrow. Quote
sexkitten Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 We couldn't get out of bed so we went to BC today instead. It worked out though cause #1 conditions were great and the crowds were minimal and #2 Bob had some work to do this afternoon. We'll definitely be at Blue this coming weekend though. I need longer runs. Quote
ColoradoHigh Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I went. It was alright. Not the best. So we got there at 7:30, and got lift tickets. The snow was soft groomed, snow, and the race course was set up already. Since I was skiing with my new custom insoles, I had to get used to the feeling of it. So after a few runs, I got used to it, and felt like I was skiing on a cloud. I had total control. The snow was really chunky, and very hard as the morning went on. The best trail, was Barney Bumps/Main Street. Best snow, and man made pow made for excellent carves. It got mad crowded with a lot of Tom's, Dick's, and Harry's. A lot of people that didn't know what they were doing, so we left at around 11:30. Challenge was chunky/icy, so we didn't go on it to much. Paradise was 2nd best, with very soft snow. But a lot of noobs on it. Switchback opened up at around 9, after intense snow making, they were grooming it. Nice corduroy for the first run on it, but then, very icy. So Main Street prevailed as the best trail. Good snow on it. But main thing was, CROWDS were so big today. It was almost to much. Quote
Justin Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I had a bit of a rough night last night so I decided to not ski today. Plus the doc told me to stay off skis for a couple days to let my cuticle heal. Everything looks all good now so I'll be up shredding tomorrow. Quote
Johnny Style Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 This morning was not as good as yesterday. The lack of sun was part of it, but it was as Chippy described, crowded. Otherwise the conditions weren't too bad. If anything, all the racers on the mountain provided plenty of motivation. I left after 10 because it was starting to fill up. Nice morning workout. Came home and took a nap and now it's time for an afternoon of X-games. Quote
toast21602 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 i didnt think crowds were an issue... i got there at 7:30 and left around 10:30 and didnt have to wait more than 2-3 minutes... skied park all day and even that wasnt too crowded. the jumps were on point once again. Quote
Shadows Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 (edited) i got there at 7:30 and left around 10:30...skied park all day what? Edited January 27, 2008 by shadows Quote

So Main Street prevailed as the best trail. Good snow on it. But main thing was, CROWDS were so big today. It was almost to much. Ya, chippy pretty much nailed it. I was there today with a group I help run at Drexel. I was joined today by Ryan, Jaffe (who drove up since he didnt get on the trip), Mike, who's an instructor at Blue, and Lenny, a person from our trip who I met in line for the Quad. Since I didn't have to pay to go I got the snowboard rental and snowboarded for my 3rd time ever. We did 2.5 runs down Easy Out/Vista, then headed down Burma rd and over to the six-pack. We went down Paradise about 4 times, it was good stuff. Mike got free rentals so he got a board and rode with us (his 2nd time on a board) until he had to go teach lessons, and it was also Ry's second time riding. We all did pretty well, and I'm looking forward to riding again. I got to the point where I could get down Paradise without falling. I must say, my biggest concern was getting blindsided by other skiers/riders. On two of my turns I had people come too close to me (one nearly touched me) and since I'm not skilled yet as a rider I wasn't comfortable. After snowboarding for about 3 hours, we headed in for lunch at the Summit Lodge. Ry and I got the chili in the bread bowl, it was DELICIOIUS. I can't wait to go to Blue again so I can get more of that chili...the breadbowl was great too. I also got the Sam Adam's happy hour special, which was from 12-2. It was Winter Lager and was normal price ($6), but cuz of the happy hour I got to keep the pint glass, so I wasn't too unwilling to pay for it. After lunch I switched back to my skis for the afternoon. Hit up challenge, switchback, lazy, main street, paradise, then razors, challenge again, paradise, and razors again. I was really disappointed that switchback was so icy. Lazy wasn't spectacular either. Challenge was typical, crusty in the middle, a little bit of pow on the side...it was enough to turn on. I was having trouble getting rhythm in Barny's Bumps since they were groomed out last night, and my hurt knee was giving me a little bit of trouble. Otherwise, Main Street, Paradise, and Razor's Edge were gorgeous, nice snow on all of them. For the last run of the evening Jaffe challenged me to a speed race down Razor's...his mistake. I had him beat from the start. Ry started us off, and we skated on the flat part for the first 40 feet until the headwall began...I continued to push myself down the headwall until I reached good speed. Entered a full tuck as soon as it flattened out a little. We finished at the blue line used by the racers earlier....I won by about 5 seconds. That was a lot of fun, but I don't like to fly down those hills every time as I worry that something bad could happen sooner or later. The light was good enough but not great, and I had trouble making out the features of the snow for a very short span in the middle of Razor's. Today was a great day for me for both skiing and riding, and I can't wait to make it up to Blue again. I think next time I come up will be an upcoming Thursday or Sunday Night so I can do NASTAR for the first time. P.S. I did purchase a helmet this morning, got the Giro G9. It's a decent helmet and I'm glad I made the investment. Since I've had two ski trips that I didn't have to pay for this season (Killington and today) it's helped me make some necessary equipment upgrades/additions. Quote
sexkitten Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 Nice corduroy for the first run on it, but then, very icy. This is one of the reasons we've been doing BC instead. I guess because it's warmer down here there isn't ice. Really I don't think there was any ice or hard, hard, hard pack at BC. Oh Blue... please get your crap together... soon. But main thing was, CROWDS were so big today. It was almost to much. Even with all of the trails open? From the race maybe? Quote
