Quick TR for 2/16/8

Rolled into the lot with Ty at 7:30am and left her with her team at 8:30am. Met up with Chippy and You-Gene for some NF runs. Made our way from Lower Runaway over to Boomer. Boomer looked great, but had everything from powder to cord to some crust on dust. Smoke was okay, but Cannonball was the best it's been all year, with a few inches of airy powder over cord---the kind of snow that hangs in the air after you blow through it. WL was being groomed in the a.m., but was hard and crusty on the two runs I took it in the afternoon.

Crowds were extremely light in the morning. The lot was 1/4 full by 11am, but kept building through the day. By the time I met up with Melissa and her very hot snowboarder GF, cars were being parked to the left of where you first pull into the lot. Busy, but nothing crazy. Probably the busiest day this season, although lift lines were three or four minutes at most.

Funniest thing of the day was what happened under the Long Haul as it passes over Lower Fast Track at it's steepest headwall...one Ranger wiped out, followed by another and then another. They all fell at the same spot and just bowled into one another. It looked really goofy that they just fell over and crashed in a heap. But then Chippy, You-Gene, and I did the same run and hit the same spot and I nearly went into the woods at 40mph, or so. A snowmaker must have dumped water right at the worst spot at the headwall breakover and created a little ice rink. When we took the Long Haul back up, patrollers were roping the slope off for a groomer to fix it.

Great day and some great snow in the morning.

Here's a shot of little Chippy on course:

Nice report!!!...No pictures of Melissa and her friend..:D Chippy was sure grilling up some serious steeze...totally legit!!!!

No pics...Melissa is really protective and wouldn't let me even ski with her and her friend, so we just chatted it up when they first got there.

LIES ALL LIES! When I saw Ski, he had already changed out of his ski boots and was rocking the Tims. We tried to get him to stay, but he was having none of it. It's a shame too, because the torch parade and fireworks were awesome--they were even playing 60s/70s classic rock over the speakers--Ski, wasn't that your generation??? :)

Now time to add my little TR... Sarah and I didn't get on the snow til 3pm (we wanted to go late so we could just stay for the evening's events). BIG MISTAKE! First, the NF gets shadowy at this time, and it is impossible to see the texture of the snow. Ex. Smoke had some bumps on it when we went down it, but the light was so flat and shady, you couldn't see them until you were right on top of them. Ditto for Boomer (started out okay, but then got shadowy and you couldn't see). Cannonball was fun if you stayed to the sides (center was a bit skiied off). We hit the top to bottom slopes, which were fun because we made a point of skiing to either the far right or left. The centers were pretty skiied off. Actually, I totally skidded out and fell where everyone else did--I made a big point to ski to the left of the trail, but then some person was stopped on the left, and I decided to just cut across to the right side, and I cut across right where it was a sheet of ice and slipped (under the lift--watch out for this spot in the future). After hitting the NF and Runway/Fasttrack for a while, we decided to go check out the pipes. Whistler had GREAT snow, and Mainline had decent snow. Sarah tried the half pipe, and then got pissed when I didn't try it. She was all, "WTF, I thought you were going to do it!" And I was all, "Um no, I said I would check it out with you, not go in it!"

We finished up with the fireworks and then got a couple drinks in the lodge, which was hopping! All in all, a great day, except that I didn't get to see any other PASRs:(

Oh man, great pic of me...but I could improve my stance...my legs need to be bent more...

Well, here is my TR...

...My dad and I got to Sno at roughly 8:30, we booted up in the lodge, and got onto the snow at around 8:45. I saw Ski in the lodge with Ty waiting for race team to begin their practice. Shes improving at racing too! Then, Ski, my dad, and I went to the NF for about 3 runs or so, and did, I believe Cannonball, which had the type of snow, Ski explained, to squeak underneath your skis...or I would explain it as SNO-making gold. It was beautiful. Then we did Boomer, which was nice, but had some minor bumps, and some ice. Then we went to the lift that goes all the way up, where we saw the rangers skid into each other, which was freaking funny. We did that trail, and too skidded a little. I took it with extra caution, as to not skid into the trees. Then we went back up the Long Haul lift, and went over to the NASTAR course and to see the 22' half pipe, which was freaking HUGE. Never seen so much man made snow in the Poconos before. Pretty cool. They were grooming it out all day, on one of the walls, building it up, little by little.

EDIT, not done with the TR...

...Then we did Whistler, and the snow was AMAZING. Soft, packed powder, easy to carve. Ski gave me some more pointers. Then Ski had to help set up for NASTAR. At this time, my dad and I went in for some lunch. All we had was a sandwich my dad made. I also had a hot Belgian waffle with Vanilla syrup and whip cream. Yummy.

Then we did Nastar for the remainder for the afternoon. I kept getting a bronze medal, with times between 40.50-42.10. Not bad, and very consistent. It was really fun watching the ski coaches from Sno Mtn. Race Team. A lot of the kids were really damn good, better then me. Even Ty was racing, and she was flying!

All in all, the day was AMAZING, with low lift lines, and great snow, it couldn't be beat!

You have a really good 'high tuck' going on in that pic, Chippy. It's a good position to be in as you enter the headwalls because you are transitioning from skating to stand up turns. Save the low tuck for the last five gates in the flats before the finish line.

Got it?

A great example of high tuck turns are on the GS course at Beaver Creek. Racers leave the wand, then spend about 15 seconds on flat terrain that has rollers. The World Cup guys use a high tuck and pump through the rollers before cresting a super steep breakover.

Chippy, if I owned Sno, you'd be their marketing guy..seriously.. :D

Sweet....and you'd pay me like 50 bucks an hour...

But to bad that'll never happen.

Yeah, I guess I do have a good high tuck, but my dad still says that my knees need to be bent just a bit more....

Just to add, Chippy, there isn't really anything to pick on in this pic. Here are the good things you have going on:

*Your hands are high and forward.

*Your inside leg is bent and your outside leg is longer, with just a slight bend---it's still a slow part of the course, so it's not necessary to be more dynamic (dynamic=having your legs out away from your body) because you are riding a mostly flat ski to gain speed through gentle turns.

*Your skis seem to be tipped equally.

*You aren't a-framing (inside knee isn't pressing toward the downhill knee).
