ColoradoHigh Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) Here is a video of Matthias Lanzinger racing in a world cup race. He injured his leg so bad, that he might have to get it amputated. The video is VERY graphic, so a caution goes out! Edited March 4, 2008 by Chippy Quote
Melissa Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 I just read that it was amputated. Sadness. Quote
Ski Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 The scary thing is that it's an absolutely unremarkable crash. It's just something that happened. No problem with netting, no trees, no terrible line choice...jeez, that's just horrible. Quote
Saurus Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 did his lower part of his leg spin a bunch of times around in his knee socket?? Quote
Bobert540 Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 That sent chills up my spine. What a horrific crash. So sad! Quote
moe ghoul Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 Ouch, that was gruesome. Lance biked with one ball like a champ, Matt can come back and compete in a different way. Quote
First Grade Teacher Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 Ouch. I read yesterday that they might have to amputate but that sucks that they ended up removing it. Quote
Melissa Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 Hmmm, well, I guess to be a Pollyanna, at least they don't put down people who break their legs like they do with race horses! Quote
Ski Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 It's picking the worst of tragedies, but Swiss skier Silvano Beltrametti went through the netting during a race in 2001 and was paralyzed. With the amazing titanium prosthesis now available, Lanzinger will be up and running in six months. Downhillers are warriors. Quote
toast21602 Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 wow that is a terrible thing to have happen. Quote
phillycore Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 Just horrible to see something like that happen to someone... Prayers go out.. Quote
sibhusky Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Thank god Siblet isn't racing anymore. Now I just have to worry about the fact that she wears a POC helmet (see discussion on the Ski Racing forum and Epicski) and has decided her new interest is off piste in the powder and trees. Quote
Glenn Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 ... at least she's wearing a helmet. Besides aren't you a tree's/pow skiier yourself? Quote
sibhusky Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 ... at least she's wearing a helmet. Besides aren't you a tree's/pow skiier yourself?Kind of, but my life has essentially happened and it's just a question of whether I die of old age or skiing. Quote
Glenn Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 But isn't doing the things you really enjoy what living your life is all about. As someone who skis powder and trees I would think it would be easier as a parent. It's probably because your spending too much time on that epic ski site. Besides from my observations you're still charging hard. Quote

Besides from my observations you're still charging hard. Her rate of velocity through the trees is about quadruple mine. I won't go in with her because she leaves me stranded and lost in an unknown forest. I'd be better off by myself. I only go in the thick stuff with people who have patience. And I've scaled back a lot this year. I've only done some of the places once, for instance, and always with a buddy. Last year I'd go off into the trees by myself, I guess relying on my cell phone and consciousness for survival. This year I only do trees that have a high level of popularity or are clearly visible from a popular trail. I just want SOMEONE to notice that my red jacket ISN'T MOVING. On some of the snowy days (in fact, MANY) visibility was so bad that you could barely see the chair ahead of you. That's not a day I want to ski alone on the less frequented trails. Your body would be covered in an hour and they'd find you a day later when they hit the "mogul" and it shifted. Quote
sibhusky Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 (edited) Wow...someone forget to take her Prozac???There's a sign where I work: That which does not kill you only postpones the inevitable. I'd buy it, but it would upset Siblet. I'm 56, I'm not gonna climb Mt. Everest. Edited March 6, 2008 by sibhusky Quote
Ski Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 I'm 56, I'm not gonna climb Mt. Everest. I just watched a feature on the guy who was left for dead and spent the night 1000' from the summit with no gear, only his coat, and it was -20F. He had a really shitty time. A sherpa even poked him in the eye to see if he was dead. I found it interesting that poking you in the eye is their test. In another 15 years, you could become the oldest to summit Everest, Sib. One never knows what's ahead.... Quote
