Robert2
The ponds and lakes are STILL covered with ice here and the hardpack is still hard enough to groom with the night temps staying below freezing. Today we had groomed powder. It held up real nice all day. Does anyone here in the forum go to JF midweek besides me?

I don't get there until around 11ish mid-week. I missed today because I had a dentist appointment But I'll be back tomm and Thurs. Right now I'm pretty certain that I'll be getting a mid-week only pass next season.

If you go 3 days, on a weekend, you more than make up the difference. Weekends seem to be when we get bigger storms.......at least in some form or another. I actually was running off of you clock, the last two days, and kept an eye out for you. Edited March 12, 2008 by bigdaddyk

The sleep was well needed, plus I knew conditions would be excellent, once the sun warmed things up. I have to work 1st shift for training , so I plan on lapping the NF at Sno, in the evening. Robert2
LOL ......huh....yea... keep laughing at groomed powder..............laugh all you want...... The groomers have tillers that grind up the hardpack and leave a soft granular surface like snowcone ice or rock sugar....sometimes 2 inches deep...which skis better than most natual snowfall we get here. For daily maintenance the choice is to either make that powder or just scrape and form corduroy ice. New skiers always prefer powder over cord. Cord ice keeps you in control...instead of just sliding off flat blue ice pack. Cord ice is my choice for speed while groomed powder is what everyone else wants to play on. Most people think ice is too hard to ride with a snowboard. They just never learned how to carve. Once you learn how to get up on edge you never want to see powder again. Anywhere. Ever. The speed is that addicting. We do get a few warm days that makes slush and then night temp drops below freezing and makes solid blue ice. If the groomers can't work with the soft slush they just leave it...and we have blue ice to ride at dawn. This is the absolute best ride ..for me.. and it always chases away everyone else so I get to do laps and never wait for a lift chair. Today sucked after 1PM. The newly fallen snow was so sticky and slow I turned my board into the shop to get new wax and I put on skis........ only to find out skis stuck like tar just as bad as the board. I don't know about you, but most skiers/boarders will prefer powder over 'cord' any day. i really don't know of many people that would say "oh its snowing out and there won't be any fresh cord, so i'm staying in today." when it comes to skiing, i live for powder. i go on trips out west not just for bigger mountains and more terrain, but because they get fresh snow all the time, unlike here in PA. in January when i went to JH with Knuckle Dan, the only thing we skied was trees and powder because it snowed every day. i think the only time that we even touched a groomed cord run was when we get got off a lift or when we were trying to get to a lift since a lot of the terrain didn't drop right into a lift line. i completely disagree with those statements, and i think most people on this site will. that being said. i hope you are just kidding. I love cord and would take it over powder any day. When we were at Okemo I was honestly happier the day after the powder dump and I wasn't alone. A bunch of people stayed in on the powder day and Okemo's snow report acknowledged this the one day by saying that "everyone who avoided the powder" yesterday is in for some perfectly GROOMED packed powder today. Glenn
Gapers and racers like groomers. There are tons of great skiers/riders who most definitely can carve a turn prefer powder by a longshot. Bottom line, you can't huck 40 footers to icey landings, no matter how great you are at carving. You don't want to (although you may still do it) ride 45+ degree pitches through boney terrain on ice/hardpack. Straigtlining hardpack just isn't as much fun. It's sketchy, and doesn't feel as sexy as straightlining 10 inches of blower. Even wet EC snow is more fun than hardpack to 95% of the good riders out there who know how to edge in hardpack. nick malozzi
i'll agree glenn, my best days on the east were wet mushy days. it may have been hard to get moving quickly, but you can't beat a soft landing. i prefer the soft landing to be powder, but back east i used to pray for spring conditions. Glenn
after a full day of true powder, I prefer groomed runs to get my legs back the next. Thats why most people don't like being in the powder ON powder days. It's more work, and it's usually not consistant snow unless you are in the back country or in hike only terrain. I guess I should include out of shape old guys with gapers and racers eh?

Robert2
This is not a powder over cord over ice debate. THIS is about how we do NOT get more than 2 or 4 inches of natural snow in our average snowfalls here ... JF...in Blakeslee PA......and still get to have more days open than BM and CB. I spend 14 weeks at JF last year and boarded in total whiteout blizzards no more that 3 times all winter. Sure we get a zinger snowfall once in a while but thats not how you run a ski resort here. We have to make and groom our own snow to depend on a safe surface at dawn the next day. So we have to depend on the art of grooming and that means groomed powder and cord ice..... or just plain ungroomed blue ice when its too warm to groom at night. So when I post a terrain report and say we had groomed powder you all should just take that as conditions were good for skiers. I'm a carver. I don't do jumps. I don't do bonk yards. So I'm not ever concerned about hard crash landings. I just like speed. Not flight. So when we get a real hard ice condition I still go ride while everyone else gets scared off the hill and I have the place to myself just lapping the hill and the lift for 3 hours. If more people learned to control on cord ice then I wouldn't be riding alone all day. This thread posting started with me saying winter is still here at JF ....seeing the ponds still have ice on the,........and asking does anyone go daily. My face is shown briefly in the third video I posted when I took off the helmet and adjusted it so anyone can see who I am 60 seconds into that video. I've been mistaken for Billy Gibbons of ZZ TOP. Just wondering if we all post here but walk past each other at JF.
