Interesting question. He has to race for the US, so could he race "independently" from the team as a solo act? Not sure, but I doubt it. The team is responsible for qualifying athletes to represent and I'm not sure how he'd be able to bypass that process. I think there was a thread that talked about that during the Italy olympics on the board.

No, he can be on the team yet at the same time an independent in terms of training and such though I would have to believe the team wouldn't have been to fond of that.

Technically he was always on the US team. He was just training on his own. All of his results still counted for the US .
