nick malozzi
Scary shit for sure man.. at least he made it out and training obviously works even if they made some mistakes along the way the end result in this case was a positive one and one noone should take for granted.. There were def mistakes in how he approached his line. From what I can tell though his buddies made a FANTASTIC rescue. That was a pretty sizable avalanche, and they got him out quickly and all seemed to keep there wits about them. Thank you so much for posting this up. I'm hoping to get out in the BC more and more every season, and while I tend to be a cautious person I will admit to having a small sense of being indestructible. Mainly because I haven't witnessed an avalanche, or anything like it. So it was hard to really wrap my head around the consequences. This video straight up gave me chills though. Not enough to keep me from wanting to get out, but def a jolt to brush up on my rescue and BC travel skills. Thanks.
mbike-ski
having the avalung not in his mouth is like riding with your helmet hanging from your belt buckle - dumb no? the wimpering noises and hands quivering really indicate how effed he really could have been... Glenn
Those avalung devices don't have any record of saftey or effectiveness. I think it would be pretty hard to keep it in your mouth without a full face. Just my opinion of course. Video is crazy. I'd like to hear more about the whole scenario. If you read he bails on his big ski cut. You can see the avalache broke right as he crests the pillow. Super classic slide propogation sight. Wish they had edited in the other helmet cams in the group.
nick malozzi
It has always been my understanding that the avalung is a very small factor in staying alive in an avalanche. It certainly doesn't hurt to use one, but it usually isn't going to be your saving grace. It also seems to me like it would be quite difficult to keep that thing in your mouth while getting pummeled by an avalanche. I had a hard time keeping a mouth guard in during my days of full check ice hockey... so I can't imagine how hard it would be to hold onto that avalung. Anyway, I hate to criticize the guy at all as I can't say that I wouldn't had made the same mistakes, but it certainly makes one think.
