A few friends and I went to silverton friday and saturday, because unlike the front range, the san juans actually have snow.

For those unfamiliar with silverton, it is a 1 ski lift ski area. While there is good skiing right off the lift, it gets tracked out, and the better terrain requires hiking. We spent friday mainly doing lift laps with one long hike because there was about 16" new over the last week (they only open on weekends), then did three hikes on saturday as the terrain right off the lift was getting tracked out. They limit their skiers to 400 per day, but there wasn't anywhere near that this weekend. They also require a beacon, shovel, and probe to ski, because while they do avi control work, they don't have the amount of skier compaction of normal ski areas in order to virtually eliminate any risk. It is a fun hill, and I highly recommend a visit there, but be in shape!

heres the TR that a friend posted on TGR,

Nice..is this your last year in Colorado??

no, i am going to graduate school at CU (just got in), which will prolong my stay in CO for at least another year. I can't imagine that I will come back to the east coast after that either, though.
