Justo8484 Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 The key to the Canyons is skiing the slackcountry, no other resort in UT has slack like that with so few people. The other resorts may have better terrain in the area but you can't use the lift for the up portion of the trip. this. it's really dumb of me for skiing it without proper avy gear, so feel free to call me out on that, but the stuff off the bootpack up 9990 then to the left through the BC access gate is a super easy hike to waist deep turns days after a storm. there's some fun little cliffs in there too. best part, it all dumps out right at the bottom of 9990 lift for 45 minute - 1 hour backcountry laps. 1 Quote

Timeless Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 obviously I didn't actually mean I would actually rather ride at MC rather than anywhere in UT, but the point was that in both trips to the canyons, the snow quality has been poor (actually genuinely east coast icey last time) and the whole overdevelopment thing is just horrible. 9990 was OK but under those conditions even that was sketchy, the same trip we had decent conditions at Brighton, Powder and Snowbird so it wasn't like the general area was suffering. Thats a bummer. I learned how to snowboard at Canyons when it was Wolf Mountain. Back then then didn't have all the development and it was like a bigger version of Brighton with natural halfpipes and whatnot. You're point about snow is absolutely correct. The cottonwoods are always going to get better snow and more of it. I've ridden Canyons many times and have gotten some great storms there. Some of the best pow days of my life were had at Canyons. My brother and I love the joint and try to get there when we are in UT. One thing that keeps people away is that the resort has so many damn traverses and cat-tracks to get from lift to lift. Riding inbounds is almost as much hiking in a deep storm than you'd do for out of bounds BC runs. Just no way to keep speed up. I'd dread riding with a boarder there in deeper snow. Due to this however, it is definitely one of the resorts in UT that holds untracked snow longer than others (Power excluded, that place is just another world...) Anyway, maybe one day you'll end up there on a snowday with someone who knows their way around and see whats good in the place. Washington State... no one should go there on a ski vacation. Its not consistent. Save it for the locals... Quote

trackbiker Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 Everythings coming up roses in the Moe-zone. 72 hours and counting............ http://www.snowbird.com/ski_board/snowreport.php I was just in Utah this past weekend. Alta 17" of nice dry powder and Snowbird had 10" more on top on Sunday. No crowds the tourists are all gone. They still have a TON of snow. Quote
