sibhusky
Great link. We've been looking for this info for the stats tables, right? Can the admins import this info somehow just in case this site goes away? In the meantime can there be a link on the stats page for the use of those who don't use an altimeter? trackbiker
I always knew Windham wasn't 1600 vert...the quad down the middle is listed at 1550 and it was 1280 according to my old avocet watch. I don't think Jack Frost is really 600 vert. The front face of Camelback is like 630 vert so maybe it is...the long flats at the bottom and top of Jack Frost is deceiving an sucks up some vert. Maybe somebody can figure out te vert of east moutain lift on google earth. Anyway most PASRs would rather perfect the perfect boardslide on a butter box to be concerned with statistics. When it comes down to it, it's about fast lifts and commaraderie. Most of the mid size and smaller mountains stretch the vertical. They measure from the top of the flag pole on the summit to the bottom of the well at the base. Blue Mt., Sno, and Blue Knob are exceptions. Even before Blue Mt. and Sno gave them competition Blue Knob reported the actual vertical. IIRC Elk is about 970'. Not too much of an exaggeration. Bear Creek, Spring Mt., Jack Frost, and Alpine Mt. all exaggerate the vertical. I have the real verticals somewhere. I'll try to find them and post them. I'm out of town for the next few days so it may not be until the weekend. Google Maps is not all that accurate as far as vertical. They tend to understate vertical. The best source is the USGS survey maps.

MV Frank
Hey guys - I'm one of the dudes behind Mountain Vertical. Saw this was posted from our site stats page, and thought I'd pop in. Great link. We've been looking for this info for the stats tables, right? Can the admins import this info somehow just in case this site goes away? In the meantime can there be a link on the stats page for the use of those who don't use an altimeter? haha don't worry, the site isn't going anywhere. Anyway, what we found is that a ton of the smaller ski areas inflate by rounding up to the nearest hundred... so a resort with a vertical of 513 ft usually gets reported as 600 ft. Silly, huh? Anyway, thx guys, and keep on spreading the word Frank

OutCold
Well that 1720 figure I think is off the K1...you can ski te entire 3k but it involves some skating and poling. I've done the entire 3k at killington. On a snowboard it can be slow and painful, but overall it's one long ass run.

OutCold
I've also doe the entire 3k at Kmart nothing like the sustained 3-4k you get at jackson hole. Yeah I can imagine 3-4k of a decent pitch can get tiring. I've gotta get to JHole one of these days. It's #1 on my hit list.

trackbiker
OK, here's the real scoop on some local verticals. I generously estimated the top and bottom of lifts to give the areas the most optomistic verticals. Camelback claims 800' Actual is about 780'. Not to much of a stretch. I'd let them slide and round to 800'. Bear Creek claims 510'. Actual is about 480'. I'd let them slide with rounding to 500' but where did they get the 510'? I'm guessing it is leftover from when it was Doe Mountain. Shawnee claims 700' Actual is 660'. 700' is a bit of a stretch. Big Boulder claims 475'. Actual is about 400'. I'm sure this exaggeration goes back to at least the '60's. Spring Mountain claims 420'. Actual is 360'. Their Rock Top chair has a vertical of 343' according to skilifts.org. My thinking is the original owners added 100' to the original side. And the winner for exaggerating their vertical in PA is.....Jack Frost. The actual is likely less than 500' but they claim 600'. Did they just add 100'? It was even less when it originally opened. One from NY. Greek Peak claims 952' Actual is less than 800'. They have the potential for about 832' with the expansion that they've been planning for 30+ years but to ski it you would have to traverse a lot of flat terrain. I don't blame some mountains for stretching to the next 100' if they are past the X50' mark. But to add over 100 is really a stretch. Vertical is only a guide. Most people even on bigger mountains spend the day skiing a pod with much less vertical than the mountain offers. If the terrain is good and you enjoy it, who cares what the vertical is? I sometimes like lapping fun terrain on a smaller mountain. Edited October 30, 2010 by trackbiker
RidgeRacer
Thanks Trackbiker. It's all relative in PA since we're pretty much all vertically challenged. That's why we travel to bigger Mts.
sibhusky
You are making a HUGE assumption about the reliability of those maps. Maps like that for our house show markedly different altitudes from measurements taken both with an altimeter and three different GPS units. Over 100 feet off. Those maps don't take into account minor bumps on a ridge very well, for instance. They only look at the "big picture". I also notice that NONE of the PA mountains are "verified". See other sections of the country for the check marks next to the listing. Edited October 30, 2010 by sibhusky
