The fog down here in Harrisburg was unreal last night and even with all the fog and 24 hours of torrential downpours the snowpack remains. Probably down to about a foot or so across the area and the giant piles are holding very strong.

How much snowfall did Harrisburg receive? You check out Liberty, round top or whitetail yet?

Why does fog melt snow faster?

The fog was what's called advection fog, the fog was actually in a sense being produced by the snow pack. As warm air rushes over the cooler snow pack the snow evaporates, the air then becomes thick with water vapor that naturally condenses on a nuclei, something like salt ions or dust particles. This is called fog.

They only way in which it would melt faster than an air mass of equal temp and humidity is if it was also sublimating in which it goes directly from a solid to a gas, this happens occasionally in southern CO and AZ, during sublimation a pack can lose feet in a relatively short amount of time. Simply put the air is warmer, temp is energy, thus when the warm air mass with it's more energetic particles collide with the cooler air it jiggles the snow atoms more and to a high enough energy state where it skips the liquid state.

Prez day on Monday could be nice. 5-8" in the forecast for palmerton.

Wow forecast just says chance of snow that day. Where are you seeing amounts so far in advance?

We got 1/4" overnight but the heavier snow is supposed to fall later this afternoon. This isn't exactly giving me the powder panic.
