My husband has this thing about not turning on the heat until....well he used to say Thanksgiving when we lived in New Jersey, but now at some point I'll get pissed and just turn it on and put up with the flack. Propane costs. Need to start building fires, but even more important, next weekend needs to be chainsaw weekend.

Getting a bad deja vu feeling....

Early October cold, snows up north...

Mother Nature teasing us bad I think. Totally expecting mid-winter summer now.

Who knows what the weather has in store, but a nice dusting in PA during October would be nice... A one foot cement storm two years in a row just seems plain unrealistic.

On to the real news. In the northeast, Magic, Sunday River, and Killington have all blown out the mice. Additionally, per Facebook and as of yesterday early morning, Killington has started to blow base building snow on Rime for the season. They have a solid window for most of today and to tonight... The 10 day doesn't look too good for further snowmaking, but temperatures are definitely trending downward and towards their seasonal averages... I don't think Halloween turns on the 27th are out of the question there...

Ride when are u moving back up to Maine?

Job will probably start the beginning of December again, but with Thanksgiving so early this year, I'll probably go up and get a full week on the snow beforehand... That's the goal at least...

i hope that's the trend b/c the 10-day outlook for SEPA shows a warming trend back into the high 60's and lo 70's.....

Platekill also put a couple pictures up on Facebook of it snowing. Not too sure how this weathers going to hold up though its definitely too cold too early to get excited.

Let it be 70 degrees until December 1st...then be in the 20s in December.

Just because you don't think you'll get out before December this year doesn't mean you shouldn't be thinking positive. Although rare, some years have some excellent conditions during Thanksgiving. I'm sure there must have been a year like that while you were in college... No?

I would also like it to be known that this morning at the elevation of 4848', Snowshoe Mountain also dusted off the snowmaking equipment. However, this was only a test and they don't expect to fire them back up until the beginning of November. However, how can your stoke level not rise when a mountain in West Virginia has lit them up this early?

A ski area in WV that I'll never ski at testing snowmaking equipment a month and a half before they plan on opening is like getting a prostitute and only getting to smell her toes.

If the last couple years are any indication, you won't ski anywhere outside of Blue or Jackson ever again...

Whatever Ride it was only last year that I only skied blue and Jackson. If last season is any indication you'll only ski flat low elevation east coast areas and take crappy pictures with hardly any reports.

Damn, you got me again...

And on a different note, another flat low elevation east coast area will open tomorrow. However, it seems to be a soft opening for season pass holders only, and they will close down after that. Seems like a bunch of work for no extra revenue, but I guess the Beast has finally come out of hibernation...

I think they're charging $25 pp tomorrow...not a lot, but tomorrow's skiing is not included in the season pass fee

Skiing tomorrow is limited to people who have already doled out some dough for a long term commitment. The $25 is for those who have paid the $99 (?) for an express card. So, for the cost of $124 I guess you could ski tomorrow, but if the past has been any indication, it's going to be a cluster...

i think it would be more telling if elk decided to blow snow before turkey day......heck, with their elevation and latitude they should be able to open first in eastern pa. but they're cheap and won't be open until mid december...

Most times it not much colder there than it is at BB and BB can open quicker than Elk since their trails are about a quarter of the length and they are closer to Philly which means people will drive an hour less to ski one trail.

In other news, loveland appears to have given up in the race to open this year... they stopped making snow at the basin and appear to be concentrating on getting a run open at the valley for the race teams. I guess the real money is in racing for them. They liked getting national news coverage, but will likely be missing out on that now that a number of east coast resorts have opened. A Basin is still pushing hard though and should be open within a couple of days I think.

The racing money seems to make all the difference, Copper really upped the Super Bee area complex with all those dolo's. hahaha maybe I have that remembered wrong but I do believe they added a ton of snow making equip and such.

As for the PA peeps, early cold is generally bad, only virgins want it short and sweet. Skiing is a marathon, sustained cold for the NE is what we really need.

Additionally as a matter of house keeping there is an entire second half of our state that is far higher, colder and snowier than the eastern sliver. Elk mtn ain't got shit on the Knob or even the Laurel Highlands for that matter.

It's a revelation that any resort makes money on racing. The two resorts I had a racer at were fond of saying how much they lost.

GSS, guessing don't make it so. We used to have national events here, but even the lodging and food being added in didn't counteract the cost of course prep, additional personnel, etc.

If Whitefish loses money in racing they should have discontinued it. Generally race kids have a giant sense of entitlement so most mountains would be better off without them cutting the lines and zipping in and out of goobers.

I agree, running a ski resort is a business, and if it is losing money it should be cut. Furthermore, for once, I agree with GSS on the entitlement. While many racers are well behaved, we do have a feeling of entitlement at our mountain for racers that is quite annoying.

As to the Loveland situation, I saw several pics today that point toward them still making a run at their typical early season opening run. They say they should be open within a week, and with the projected temps, that still seems possible.
