Are u and Phillycore and Smartass heading west this season?

Let's see what Santa leaves under the tree for me.

Blue has a waterpark, a new sign, and eyes on a valley hotel. Barb is making this place camelback style legit.

Camelback style would be a bad move IMO. Blues water park would be completely separate from the slopes which is a good thing.

I don't think camelback has a hotel. Blue still has the better terrain than camelback.

I don't think camelback has a hotel.

They proposed it in 2005, then put it on hold in 2008 when the economy tanked. Now that it is coming back, they seem to think that a 453 room hotel and 120,000 sq ft indoor waterpark costing $145 million will work. They are moving ahead. They seem to have all the necessary approvals, but are having trouble finding that kind of financing (shocker).

I agree. When I first went to CB, their water park location in the middle of all the ski attractions seemed ridiculous. I understand that they are limited on their flat land, so I see why it went where it did, but I think that Blue has the luxury of flat land (both where it will be located, and in the valley) that they didnt. The views at Blue will be sweet too.

Wow $145 million that's double what the mountain paid for...that's almost as much as the new hockey arena they are building in downtown allentown.

I've always wondered how much the operators lease the mountain for and how the specifics work. If they paid $69.5 million for it, then they must be getting a good chunk of revenue per annum.

Aren't all those rooms gonna sit vacant 75% of the year unless people start traveling to the Poke N Hoes midweek.

Was anybody outside today. It's a tit bit nipply..37 degrees and windy...colder than alot of my sessions at Blue.

I think a bunch of it will depend on marketing. The addition of the hotel and indoor water park will make the resort "more family friendly," and will give those who get cold or bored something to do. Also, I think the indoor water park, coupled with lodging deals, will extend the shoulder season that normally isnt warm/cold enough for the outdoor park/skiing. Unfortunately, with that expense and debt service, I would bet that they will outprice the market. Additionally, they have significant competition already. I wonder if a "village" with amenities is next?

I'm sure Camelback is bringing in $30 million plus in revenues annually between the skiing and other attractions but I'm also guessing the profit margin is under 15% due to all of their overhead..if I ever buy a ski resort I'll make sure it has an A frame lodge to satisfy Pocono Ocean City...waterpark off in the woods..cheap lift tickets...and the friendliest employees...I'll prob hire Jim Daly from Blue as a consultant because he knows the biz.

Thank you for throwing out a number that had nothing whatsoever to do with my question. The operating company, Art Berry, may make $30 million a year, but how much do they pay to the property owners (EPR) to use that property each year? $1 million? $2 million? The operator and owner are separate, so thank you for ignoring that fact.

Snow welcomed at Whitefish Mountain Resort

WHITEFISH - The snow starting falling in the Flathead Valley Friday night and it just keeps on coming.

 

It may not be ideal for drivers, but others are rejoicing over the overnight winter wonderland - including eager skiers and snowboarders at Whitefish Mountain Resort.

 

"We saw the snow this morning when I woke up, and I wanted to go up," Whitefish High School student Brendan Young said.

 

"I've been planning it for a while, we've been getting ready all day to hike the mountain," added classmate Kody Canfield.

 

The mountain doesn't officially open for another three weeks, but that didn't stop hundreds of people from enjoying what some described as the best day of preseason skiing they've ever had.

 

"This is fantastic skiing. There is so much snow here for mid-November, I can't believe it. We skied all the way down in fabulous powder," former Big Mountain employee Fred Jones told us.

 

"If it wasn't so foggy, it would probably look like the Chilkoot Trail, up in Alaska. There's a steady stream of people heading up. For early season right now-you just look around and there's a lot of snow and there's more in the forecast," explained Dave Stephens with the Big Mountain Ski Patrol.

 

The numbers showed that 48 inches of snow had settled at the summit as of Saturday afternoon.

 

The folks with Whitefish Mountain Resort are encouraging people to familiarize themselves with the Uphill Traffic Policy and the Uphill Skier Responsibility Code.

 

Skiers and snowboarders are also not allowed within 100 feet of any groomer or snow making machine as a safety precaution under a special order that the U.S. Forest Service issues year round.

 

"The snowmaking machines - when they're in operation - have both power and water lines going to them. Even though you might see the snowmaking equipment over there, underneath the snow is potentially water and power. So you have to be aware of that, not ski over it, and just stay aware from that," Stephens explained.

 

"As long as people stay safe and mind the precautions and look out for one another, we think it's great for them to get up there and start getting their legs working," added Jeff "Butte" Soyland with the Big Mountain Ski Patrol.

 

It should be noted that dogs are welcome up on the mountain, but are required to be on a leash.

They might be positioning themselves for a casino license in the future? Not a bad location, off the highway, outlet stores......

With NY casinos a reality, I doubt anyone is rushing to open up another casino in PA.

Look at all the work PA/Sands has done in Bethlehem to the infrastructure. Huge costs for that work. And word on the street is that the Sands is vastly underperforming.

With Pocono Raceway so close, I can't imagine they would grant another license.

Ride what street are you getting your info from? Have you been there lately? In fact the whole steel stacks area is doing very well.
