bjakeski Posted December 31, 2016 Report Posted December 31, 2016 Planning on heading to Elk for the WVIA Day, Thursday, 1-5. Noticed there were still some trails not open. How are conditions? Quote
rummy Posted January 1, 2017 Report Posted January 1, 2017 Today they varied from perfect on most trails to slightly chunky in spots on three trails. Maximum one minute lift lines. But don't tell anyone......Bar beers were cold. Quote

rummy Posted January 2, 2017 Report Posted January 2, 2017 Most parties are held at the half-way house by the roaring fire pit. I've seen a few over the years in the parking lot on Spring Carnival weekend. Oh and thanks Jeff for that very accurate beer menu update. 2 Quote

Old Geezer Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Anyone got a Friday/weekend conditions report? Quote
rummy Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Very firm Packed Powder. Won't take much traffic for ice to peak out. All the moguls are gone on Tunck Slalom will be closed for racing. The West Indians should all be open, in fact, every trail but Lehigh will probably be open by Sunday. Skiing's great- bar beers are cold... Quote
rummy Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Ski for Colin day today. $25.00 (I think) lift tickets available at Idlewild Ski Shop Quote

Blew additional snow overnight on many trails. Packed to loose powder on most slopes. Tunk is now moguling. Top speed this AM 56.8 mph. Not bad for a 66 year old. Bar beers are cold.... 1 Quote
GrilledSteezeSandwich Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Thanks for the updates sounds pretty good up at Elk!! 56.8 miles per hour what run was that on?? Don't think I hit over 45 mph at blue today. To many people and also snow wasn't particularly fast. When I'm 66 I think I'll ski at fast on groomers. Not in the chop Quote
rummy Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Tecumsah, groomed, not overly crowded.. the corrals are empty. overcast and 16* no wind. Quote
moe ghoul Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 I reallly miss Elk, Chet's and the mid lodge. Good times and memories. A few years back I storm chased and slept in the Moetel in the lot. Seems like 100 years ago. Quote
tnt Posted January 9, 2017 Report Posted January 9, 2017 How are the crowds at Elk on MLK weekend? Thinking about heading there Saturday. Quote
rummy Posted January 9, 2017 Report Posted January 9, 2017 Saturday 's usually the busiest day. SP holders usually ski from 8:30 to 10:30. Take a break until noon, then ski until the lunch crowd comes out at about 1:30. Sunday is less busy and by afternoon a lot of the crowd is headed home. You can also run the singles line on the quad or the double on the quad side. another tip is most skiers will head to the quad side first, so around 11:00 am the twin doubles at the lodge can be less crowded. Overall skiing will be less busy than Blue and the Pocono mountains. Montage is the exception and should be a good choice depending on amount of terrain open. All of ELK's trails should be open by MLK weekend. Quote

theprogram4 Posted January 9, 2017 Report Posted January 9, 2017 Thanks Rummy - you think Montage is less crowded than Elk on a holiday? montage is never crowded, ever. on a holiday elk probably gets 10X as many people Quote
GrilledSteezeSandwich Posted January 9, 2017 Report Posted January 9, 2017 I know that montage is less crowded than elk on a holiday. Quote
Ski2Live Live2Ski Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) Northface on Montage, where all the interesting skiing is, I have never waited in a lift line for more than 1-2 minutes even on a holiday weekend. On a normal weekend I ride the quad lift solo half the time. Will likely be there one day this weekend. I frankly don't understand how they turn a profit on their skiing. (Or why more folks don't take advantage of the great skiing they offer). Edited January 10, 2017 by Ski2Live Live2Ski 1 Quote
tnt Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) What's the vertical on that North Face lift? Given the weather, looks like everyplace is going to be a frozen mess. Edited January 10, 2017 by tnt Quote
