Margaritaville Skier Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Was sitting in work last evening bored to death and pulled up the new almanac on the internet courtesy of AOL. They're predicting a "POLAR COASTER"( their words not mine) for the north east this year with colder than average temperatures with numerous snow storms. The down side will be temperature swings from bitter cold to warm spells. Should make for an interesting season. I guess winter is on it's way. PAX Quote
skifreak Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I like everything except for the warm spells. I have this funny feeling we are going to get a good blizzard this year, we are overdue. Quote

skimom Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Sibby: I thought for sure you would have researched it out, and found a source indicating that the Rockies would have a great winter. I'd love you to prove me wrong... Quote
romemadman Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 my parents arent evenn sure about the trip any way i don't know how long my winter vaction is it is either a week or a 4 day weekend i would never pass a chance to go out west i would like it even more it it was a snormy winter when i go Quote
Gurp Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 I find the almanacs usually really close to acurate. I cant wait for this season, i ahve a feeling its gonna be a big one. Quote
romemadman Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 i really want there to be a huge blizzard i t hink we r over due for one Quote
skifreak Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 The only thing I hate about this prediction for us is it will get bitter cold but then we get warm spells. Now how much do you want to bet that when its bitter cold outside we will have no precipitation near us. Then when it gets warm we will get so much precipitation, but it will be all rain. Quote
Margaritaville Skier Posted August 31, 2005 Author Report Posted August 31, 2005 Just look back to the winter of '02/03. Same basic prediction. We opened the first week of December that season and ended up closing the following weekend for a torrential thunderstorm. After that, the season ran great right up to the last week of March . PAX Quote
skifreak Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 hmm, I remember blue opened on December 6th back in 02, but I don't remember anyone closing early the following week for a thunderstorm. I know 2001 was bad and I hope we don't get another one of them. Quote
Papasteeze Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 i would never pass a chance to go out west i would like it even more it it was a snormy winter when i go 31779 too much snow can be nerve racking - getting into the Tahoe basin that had had 20 feet of snow by end of january made traveling to get there.. bigdaddyk Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 From what I've read, the warmest summers were followed by the snowiest winters....and this year was one of the warmer summers in a while. Quote
sibhusky Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Sibby: I thought for sure you would have researched it out, and found a source indicating that the Rockies would have a great winter. I'd love you to prove me wrong... 31777 I've never known an Almanac to have any relationship beyond coincidence to what happened. I don't even trust the NWS. I mean, if they can't get today right, how are they gonna predict the next six months? We had an usually DRY winter, followed by an usually WET spring, followed by a record setting WET June, a really DRY and hot July, and a fairly dry and cool August. Based on that, what should I expect? Last year, one thing I know for sure, we got our snow TOO EARLY. Remember that White Halloween pic I posted? That right there was our death knell. But, even tho we closed early, we had super ski conditions in February while it wasn't snowing, because we had ACTUAL SUN. Which doesn't happen in February. March rolled around and it started snowing. We closed with tons of unused powder. So, who can tell? The main thing is to get out there when you can and not expect things to get better next week. Just load up your ski days as soon as the place opens and don't risk getting shortchanged when the season doesn't shape up the way you thought. Quote
