zaldon Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 just wondering if it is ok to reuse wax that has allready been scraped off the base? Quote
skidude Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 I would say most of the time its not a very good idea. First off, if you hotwax and scrape then use that wax again, any dirt that was in your base, and you got out hotwaxing would go back in. After skiing in the spring, you can hotwax 2 or 3 times, and still see lots of visible dirt coming out of your ski bases. If it is somewhere like hood, you can hot wax 5 times, before the wax comes out looking 'clean'. With a new board, you would want to hot wax and scrape to get the PTex hairs that are sticking up, but I would say you want new wax each time, because you don't want the extra ptex coming back onto your base. I guess the short answer would be don't do it.... Quote
Ski Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 Yeah, what 'Dude says for sure. The best method of cleaning your bases is to hot wax and scrape. Why? Because it pulls the dirt, oils, and other crap out of your bases in the scraped off wax. Quote
skimom Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 Wow, Zaldon, I can't decide whether you are the cheapest person on the planet or whether you deserve an award for being the thriftiest. But I got a chuckle out of the thread. How about giving Zaldon the "Nice Try" award? Quote
LineSki Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 I recycle my wax only when I have like one bar left. I do mine in my garage so my dad used to get pissed about all the shavings being on the ground so I started scraping them into a five gallon bucket and leaving them in there. So one day I just put them on my skis and melted it up. Im not really worried about the condition of my bases, considering I jump onto metal and run over rocks. I wax just to try and protect my skis if anything. Quote
LineSki Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 I didnt mean that the wax protects my skis from like rails. hell it only stays on for like 4 runs or so. Quote
skidude Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 Haha I know, the wax would probably stay on for 1/2 a run, when you have the hard abrasive man made snow. Anyway my guess is all you get out of waxing would be a slightly smoother ride, which you might not even notice....But thats ok Quote
sibhusky Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 But he's applying not only the dirt that came off his skis, but also the dirt from the garage floor! What possible benefit could this provide to his skis? "Let's glue some sand to these skis and they'll really rip!" Quote
zaldon Posted September 18, 2005 Author Report Posted September 18, 2005 its not touching the floor like he said he scrapes it into a 5 gallon bucket. Quote
skidude Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 its not touching the floor like he said he scrapes it into a 5 gallon bucket. 33236[/snapback] Unless he added the stuff that was on the floor to the bucket too Quote
LineSki Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 yeah my wax just goes into a bucket. Sure its dirty but i could really care less. I have so many gashes in the bottom of my skis, some dirt isnt going to hurt them. Quote
