Barb
Whew, just finished up a hut based AIARE 2 course ( the last in the series). I learned so much and all the snow science is really fascinating. Prior to this course I only used the CAIC website as a resource. I realize now that there are so many factors to look at and consider. I also have learned that there are ways to mitigate exposure even on higher avalanche days. Red Mountain Pass was closed for about 40 hours from the storm. So the first day we did companion rescue practice in a meadow behind the town of Silverton. At a certain point in the beacon rescue you have to get out of your skis. Postholing to mid thigh every rescue was really exhausting. We were finally able to get up to the hut that evening. Day 2 was a light tour and mostly digging pits. Day 3 was definitley a “full value” day. We toured into US Basin. The weather was sort of sunny to start then got stormy. We observed some remote triggered smaller avalanches from a distance. We mapped out a tour plan from Cal Topo and set a track in virgin snow to get there. Roughly 100cm. The ski down was very fun. Had to transition to skins at the end which is always somewhat annoying. today was a day of just fun touring as we officially met the requirements of the class yesterday and requested to just take off. We are both dead tired. High altitude sleeping, bad eating due to low appetite poor sleep and I have had enough. Currently at Ouray brewery waiting for my giant burger. 6
Barb
Edit not 100cm of snow. I was looking at my pole. I think probably 9-10”.

That’s deep and nice report..I was scrolling Facebook and saw a couple pictures and knew that a report was coming..airhead said there might be 4”+ coming out way so your report should hold us over until we see local backcountry reports.
Barb
Forgot to mention the parking situation. Plow trucks didn’t really plow the area. All 12 of us had to dig out some spots, took a while. Then we had to park like Tetris so we all fit. One girl got pretty stuck and 4 of us had to push her out. Morning of departure I got really stuck as someone not w our group pulled in and left me very little space to get out. I cut it too hard and dug my wheel into a snow bank. Luckily a snowmobiling bro was kind enough to pull me out w a tow strap. jammed in parking and one dead battery. 3

Barb
Had to take Shannon to the airport so figured I would do a quick uphill lap at Buttermilk. It’s 33 degrees and full sunshine. Needless to say I am a sweaty mess. Decided to try and eat a day’s worth of calories in one sitting.

Popular Post toast21602
Got the XC skis out along the D&L yesterday morning after a work meeting. Quite lovely and really enjoyed how peaceful it was with the quietness of the snow and nobody around. 9
Popular Post AtomicSkier
Quick test last evening of an easily accessible and relatively smooth "backcountry" PA line not too far from Blue with @mute1080 @Dirtwolf and @mbike-ski. Topped out at near 18 degrees, so figure middle of Paradise? Maybe? 9 2
Popular Post AirheadD8
Woke up at 4am for a bathroom trip and glanced down the hallway towards my dining room and thought I saw a tom of snow on my deck railing. I laughed and convinced myself that I was half asleep. Woke up at 6 and looked out. ??? No way! I went outside and guessed a foot. 26° and lightweight stuff. 8 Or so plowed out and it was over the top of my 12” plow! Decided to head a few miles south to a nature reserve where I hike from time to time. I was surprised to find only 6” Plan B a few miles North to Emmaus South mountain nature preserve where I toured probably 8 years ago. I was a bit disappointed to find a lot more brush than the last trip. I headed east a little more and found some more friendly area. It cliffed out and I had to detour. Only did 2 miles, the snow got considerably heavier than this morning. 9

AirheadD8
Low angle stuff today, nice to be out. Farm field was a little wind blown with a crust 4” down so I couldn’t make full turns. Should have done this yesterday. 8
Popular Post abe
Finally made it down to Whitegrass WV Sunday. This place is awesome. The realest of deals. 4 1/2 hr drive each way was worth it but I think I will get a hotel next time. Elevation is about 4300ft so just about as high as anything in the East and storms dump snow from the west in this spot first-nothing is taller till the Rockies. Before it was a nordic area it was a downhill area so there are some old school downhill runs you can hit in addition to the nordic trails, the trees, and some meadows. The higher you go the skinnier the trails get and the more alpine it looks. There are three summits on the trail system as well as access to trails in Dolly Sods and neighboring Canaan Valley and Timberline downhill areas. At the top is as its name Bald Knob would suggest, epic views. 25k of trails are groomed out of 50k in the immediate resort, and a number of them are fairly steep across 1200ft vertical. Tracks set on the lower trails and up the three mile run to the mid summit. Well maintained glades are all over the hill with untracked powder everywhere. At the bottom they have a system of fences set up to catch the snow blowing across the valley and keep it skiiable. The best part though is just that the vibes are absolutely unmatched. There were probably several hundred people there and everyone was having a blast - Hooting and hollering through the woods, hanging out by fires at the little huts all along the trails, chowing down on delicious food in the shack of a lodge at the bottom with all the rental boots hanging from the ceiling around the wood stove to dry off. And there were people of all ages including little kids just ripping through the woods. People were sliding on the whole spectrum of equipment: cross country, telemark, AT, splitboard, sleds, snowshoes. Everyone was so happy and friendly. Granola paradise A place that is good in every meaning of it. I havent been anywhere else quite like it. rgrwilco
https://www.media.pa.gov/pages/DCNR_details.aspx?newsid=1039 potential "new" touring area in PA. 2500 acres, with logging roads, 1300 vertical foot pipeline cut, and some old ski trails. I did read one article that mentioned opening it up to skiing, biking, and hiking. I would be neat if they allowed some glade clearing like some of the touring associations do in new england. 4 1
Popular Post toast21602
Shawnee 3/1/24. Empty. Full sun made it hot and sweaty with a side of ski tan. Great snow. Thankful that they allow uphill travel here M-F. Skinning to the top of F lift is always my favorite way to finish the day. It is almost never open but there is always snow up to it from the side. Barb
Another 6-8” overnight. Did a nice little morning ski from my front door. My side of the neighborhood is always last to be plowed. Here is what my street looked like. A little less work on the return as I used my own tracks My dog loves to just chill in the snow I think Aspen recorded 24”. We got a solid 16-18” in 36 hours Double post of this pic I can’t seem to delete Edited March 4 by Barb 5 3
Barb
Today Aspen had a ladies uphill event at Buttermilk. I uphilled the Tiehack side earlier this week and my heart *almost* burst out of my chest. So I decided to skin up West Buttermilk, which is the easiest. Beat my pace by 11 min since last time I did it so maybe the Tiehack lap helped me somewhat. Free swag is always nice The road to the west parking lot is rough and so so muddy. started snowing on my drive home. Next 2 days supposed to be lots of sunshine and mud 30’s, I will take it!
