Sometimes but luckily not too much.  People will leave a message on my desk phone and if I don’t return it within 2 minutes they will keep calling...it’s like damn, I’m trying to take a shit

I had one lady call me like 15 times in a week...she’s adding pictures to a tombstone and it’s taking a long time..I had no new news for her..so I just emailed her back

Does that include phone? If so, that’s a steal. 

Like, a monthly payment for the physical device itself? Nah, my phone is all paid for. But it’s $45 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data, with Wi-Fi tethering included.

This is how most of the world does it. They buy a phone (unlocked) then toss a sim card in for whichever carrier they're using. Here the majority are still financing their phones through a carrier. This is why we have a Samsung  / Apple duopoly and this is also why phone makers get away with charging $1200 for a flagship device in 2021. Most people aren't paying $1200 up front. They're paying that while tied to a 2 to 3 year contract with a carrier. Personally I like the freedom to choose the carrier that I want (including MVNOs) and switching phones when I want. I have a buddy who absolutely hates Verizon but can't leave because he's locked into the contract for the next 2 years. He'd have to drop a few grand to pay off his family's devices to get out of it now...or wait the full term. That sucks imo

LG officially pulled out of the cell phone game about a month ago. LG does extremely well but the mobile phone division was losing money like crazy.

Im the type that doesn’t care about the best phone and I got an iPhone se a couple weeks ago for pretty cheap and it’s way better than the iPhone 7 that I finally had to replace.  I refuse to have a monthly payment on anything other than my house.

Yep. You're getting 95% of the experience with a midrange device while saving 800 bucks or so plus 30 to 40 monthly. I used to be the person that needed the latest and greatest but the mid range has gotten so good recently.

Don’t you buy like two new phones a year?  I still have the iPhone 7. I’m hoping to get another year out of it.  It’s over 3 years old and even more amazing is its my only device.

3 years is impressive, considering how much you use your phone.

My daily average was 8h and 59mins, but just bumped up to 9h flat.

Impressive daily average. I’ve been as high as 10 hours but usually 6-7 hours. Mostly YouTube, PASR, Facebook and porn.  Even more impressive is I use no case and haven’t damaged the screen yet.

Most of the time a year max. The phone I have now is my second this year because they released the newer version after 6 months (instead of a year) and having the older version wasn't sitting well with me.

Sometimes a phone company will want old equipment for spare used parts in a serious crunch.  I’ve actually learned a lot about telecommunications from a few friends

@enjoralas might be able to speak to this a little bit more accurately than me, but it seems absurd to me that a phone company would take back old equipment, then take it apart for parts, then rebuild other potentially broken equipment. Labor to do that in the US is almost certainly more expensive than just swapping out the broken device with a new one.

We’ve re-deployed devices that were previously slated to be “end of life” a few times when newer devices become scarce, but it’s few and far between. But that’s only functional devices that aren’t far behind the latest equipment that can pass the “clean and screen” testing of the (somewhat) local supply chain, which I think is now all outsourced to a 3rd party anyway. Anything that’s truly broken is sent by our supply chain back to the manufacturers where I’m sure they probably refurb some of it in their overseas facilities.

 

Somewhat interesting to me was when I learned a few years ago that there is a robust secondhand market for “obsolete” cable TV technology like modems and cable boxes. While walking the vendor floor of the Cable Expo I saw a couple of vendors with racks of well outdated, from our perspective, equipment. I chatted for a while with one of the booth reps and apparently they buy up the stuff in bulk from the big companies and sell it to smaller operators who can still make use of it

When i bought this house, it had the Fios LNT thingy in the basement.  obviously they were not too concerned about getting it back when the PO shut off his service.  i was with Comcast for 2 years, then switched to Fios.  They added some gizmos to the old box when they set up my service.  When i shut off Fios at my old house, i think i had to send them back my router, which was fairly new, but uninterested in the LNT in the basement.  At one point in the old house, i forget if it was DSL, or Fios, but i called customer service for something, and the nice lady discovered i was on set on like super slow mode, based on my (theirs really) old modem.  She upgraded me to a new modem, and started giving me direction as to how to go about sending my old modem back, then she was like, "wait, ok, just throw your old modem away. its not worth the postage."
