Barb Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 What is everyone’s opinion of boa’s in ski boots. When I used to snowboard, all my boots were boa and I liked them a lot. But for ski boots, I don’t know, I am apprehensive. Thanks to tracking my stats here, I realize I am due for some new boots. Will probably wait until the Prez day sales. My current boots, Atomic Hawx, are great for me. They were comfortable right out of the box. I see now that the newer ones all have boa’s in that model. Anyone used them? Quote

Anyone used them? the shop i do work for says they're selling like crazy (at least the k2 ones). it'd be comped but, if i had to pay for them, prob not. where the boa is (at least on the k2s) i barely use those buckles as it is. pretty neat imo but pretty useless (at least in my case). 1 Quote

I have always understood that the two buckles on your instep where the BOA is don’t provide any support, but rather just keep water out. Maybe if your boots are too wide it might help. I usually ski with those buckles fairly loose because any pressure hurts the top of my instep. 2 Quote
Mixilplix Posted January 7 Report Posted January 7 My snowboard boots are hybrid lace/ boa...They are around 5 yrs old and I've had to fix one of them like three times...They don't look easy to repair in the field(touring)..Maybe wait to see about durability...When boa works you can really fine tune fit...I know some people swear by them.. 1 Quote
Barb Posted January 7 Author Report Posted January 7 Yeah, I think I will just get traditional buckle boots when it’s time. I took my son’s snowboard boots to be fixed once years ago and it was not cheap. The guy fixing them told me boa’s were bad and we should get lace up boots instead. I had lace up boots once and could never get them tight enough, so not sure I agree with that for snowboard boots. Thanks for the replies Quote

I don't get the BOA system for ski boots. I can see them for snowboard as you just snug up the entire boot, but for ski boots, I fail to see how BOA "can really fine tune fit"? Perhaps there's some other magic to the BOA system I'm not aware of? I prefer twist buckles on ski boots, as I think they allow for as close to fine tune fitting to the limit of a single turn as well as fit across various parts of the boot, depending on number of buckles. Johnny Law Posted January 7 Report Posted January 7 There is alot of boa hate out there but some of it is just bullshit. Boa is lace ups that are easier to use and slightly more comfortable. You got slop so your wasting energy in the transfer because in 4 buckle boots two aren't doing anything and one is mostly along for the ride. Lace ups or boa tries to decrease the slop and increase the points of contact giving you more effective transfer and less muscle fatigue. It's simple physics and proven over and over again in world cup, they don't temp cycle their boots afterall just becuase they hate feet. Some peeps question the durability but it's used it all kinds of other stuff without issue and I've seen lots of conventional boots ruin someone's day. I'm not an all out boot performance guy so I don't care but alot of the hate is just resistance to new things. 1 Quote
