Popular Post PSUFrankenstein Posted January 25 Popular Post Report Posted January 25 Driving to Albany later tonight then hitting Magic tomorrow. Staying in Maine Sunday and Monday nights, planning on Saddleback Monday and probably Tuesday unless I feel like paying for Sugarloaf or Sunday River. Staying at Burke Tuesday night and riding there Wednesday. Not sure on the plan after that. Either Jay or somewhere in NH Thursday then start making my way back and probably a short session somewhere Friday. Snow and beer reports to follow after tomorrow 12 Quote
mute1080 Posted January 25 Report Posted January 25 I got rid of the double post. Looking forward to the reports! Have a great trip. 3 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 26 Author Report Posted January 26 Magic...pretty good and not crowded at all. Got on the snow shortly after 8 30. Did 2 runs down Sorcerer which had a few slick spots and some bumps that were fun. Then hit up your sleeve, which was a fun intermediate bump run. After that I did 2 runs on Talisman...super fun. Whales everywhere that are getting bumped up. After that, I hit a few glades...pixie dust and Seance...thin cover but fun. Had a fiddlehead IPA and grilled chicken sandwich around 11 6 1 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 26 Author Report Posted January 26 After lunch, I headed back out. Did Sorcerer and Talisman again, then two runs on twilight zone. Left around 1 and stopped at a new brewery about a mile away, Twisted Horn. They weren't serving anything on draft yet due to legal stuff but I sampled their American pale ale and hazy IPA. Picked up a 4 pack of the pale ale. After that, I left for Saddleback. It was snowing a lot so it took longer than expected. At a brew pub in Rangeley Maine now, got an IPA and blueberry BBQ chicken pizza 7 1 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 27 Author Report Posted January 27 Time for a pale ale poolside. There are like 3 cars at the hotel. I think all the people went home after the weekend 6 Quote
GrilledSteezeSandwich Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 Great report so far. I love the early lunch and beer and back out for more and funky hotel pools. 1 1 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 27 Author Report Posted January 27 Went down green weaver to the kennebago lift. Up to the top...20 minute hike to Muleskinner. Did not disappoint. Deep pockets of snow. Some windblown ice but overall incredible 8 1 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 27 Author Report Posted January 27 After muleskinner I hit casablanca chutes 1 and 2, then casablanca glades. Great snow, good amount of powder in casablanca glades. Didn't see a single person all morning in the hike to terrain 8 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 27 Author Report Posted January 27 After all the hike to terrain, I hit a few groomers and natural snow trails. The grooming here is fantastic, although I don't think the mountain sees a lot of traffic. Stopping at the Saddleback pub for lunch now. Bissell Brothers Substance IPA and short ribbon poutine 6 Quote

Should be another 2 to 3 inches on the mountain tomorrow hopefully. It's going to be cold though, wind chill of -20 by early afternoon. 1 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 28 Author Report Posted January 28 After lunch, I rode the Rangeley quad up and did a green trail to Wooly Bugger glades. Steep and tight trees up top, along with a couple bands of big rocks. Obviously didn't jump off any. It flattens out towards the lower part so I hiked back to a groomer and back to the Rangeley quad. Went down Green Weaver to the Kennebago quad and took a run down upper governor and over to Family Secret, which is under the lift line. Back to the top and then took the Firefly traverse to Dark Wizard glades. The first part is pretty steep and at least today, required a mandatory drop or straight line depending on where you drop in. Then hit Casablanca glades again and tight line after that. Took that all the way to the bottom, found a ton of powder on lower green hornet, but it's a mellow green trail so couldn't stop or mess around too much. Finished out the day riding groomers until 3. Hit Portage tap house in the next town over and had a flight and duck for dinner. Tomorrow is gonna be bitter cold and windy so I'll probably stick to the glades and some groomers. I won't do the hike to terrain again but doubt that'll be open anyway 7 2 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 28 Author Report Posted January 28 It's good this morning. About 3" up top. Did a few powdery groomers and then started to attempt the hike to the above treeline snow fields. After like 1000 feet of trudging through waist deep snow i felt something dragging at my boot...boa coiler hanging off. Shit...popped it back on but it's not coiling or loosening. Gave up on the hike after that. Heading out muleskinner and back to the base to see if I can fix it. If not I have a spare pair in the car although brand new so they are gonna hurt 9 Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 28 Author Report Posted January 28 Went down muleskinner and off into the trees next to it, which were wide open glades and really good snow. Tried hiking another spot but it was pretty deep too. Didn't take any pics on the glades but took a few on muleskinner and lower peachys peril. Boot is done for at least for now. The part where the set screw threads into is totally ripped out. Back at the car for a beer and figure out what to do next 9 Quote
mbike-ski Posted January 28 Report Posted January 28 Not sure about SB boots but boa customer service sent me a few free replacements for my mtb shoes before they rest of the shoe finally disintegrated Quote

Where it threads into on the boot is broken/ripped out. I'll see if Burton will check it out. Not sure if thats a replaceable part. I'm sure it was user error so not too upset about it. I caught it on a few branches underneath the snow a few times 1 Quote
GrilledSteezeSandwich Posted January 28 Report Posted January 28 Nice report. Boa coiler? And why does a new one hurt? 1 Quote

I have a second pair of boots I bought 2 years ago to have as a spare pair but hadn't used them yet. Until they get broken in a bit, they tend to hurt your feet. They do have the heat moldable liners so I may do that after this trip. Quote
PSUFrankenstein Posted January 29 Author Report Posted January 29 After swapping to a new pair of boots. I went back up the Rangeley quad...did a groomed run, then back up and did Green Weaver to nightmare glades. Great snow so I did that twice, followed by a run through Thrombosis glades. After that, I did green Weaver to upper and lower green hornet. Mostly untouched snow there but pretty flat and goes all the way to the bottom beginner lift. Got lunch at the cafeteria, chicken quesadilla and left shortly after 1. Checked out a few fishing spots on the way to Burke, but it was pretty windy and cold, so I didn't bother paying for the one day NH license and kept driving. Staying at the Burke hotel, had ribs and a Frost IPA at The Pass pub. Saddleback is one of my favorite places in the east and I'm glad I was able to hit the Casablanca stuff this time. Never got to the above treeline stuff but the steeper stuff was starting to get windblown after switching boots so probably wasn't great at that point. 8 Quote

Most skiers only have one pair of ski boots. How long is the hike to the above treeline stuff? Edited January 29 by GrilledSteezeSandwich Quote

Yeah I'm stoked that I hit Saddleback on a few good days. Their connection to fly fishing is awesome too. The waffle bar at the base wasn't open (only Friday through Sunday) but I had to get a pic of the sign. Already 2" of snow overnight at Burke and supposed to snow most of the day. Tomorrow I'll probably hit Bolton, although also considering Jay, magic, or Pico. Everywhere up here is getting at least a few inches of snow today/tonight Edited January 29 by PSUFrankenstein 2 Quote
