skidude
PA Cup Finals are now that same as any race...You DON"T need to qualify for them...So it really should be called PA CUP Races 5,6,7.... New for this season, the prequalification procedures used in the past to attend Finals have been eliminated. Entry to the PA Cup Finals is now open to all racers. A race entry form must be submitted directly to the race organizer, prior to the entry deadline, for each of the seven (7) PA Cup races. http://paracing.org/mambo/index.php?option...id=295&Itemid=
Glenn
So, uh does that mean it's gonna be over crowded?
skidude
So, uh does that mean it's gonna be over crowded? Well the big thing about the first 4 PA cup races is that you had to do well in them to qualify for the finals...Now I don't even need to ski in PA, and I can still make the finals. Makes it a whole lot more tempting to just race in NY to lower my points, and then come back and race the finals. Stupid move by them.... (and yes, it will be more crowded)
Ski
They probably did it because nobody in Eastern PA wants to host races that would be regional qualifiers. And last year's sketchy weather cancelled the Western early season regional qualifiers. The reason to still ski all the Cups is to qualify for post season. Ski
I thought you qualified for post season races by doing well at the finals.... Unless they've just changed it, PA Cup Finals work just like World Cup Finals. You qualify for Finals by earning points on the World Cup scale (100 for a first place; 80 for second; 60 for third, etc., down to 1 point for a 30th place finish). The top finishers after the first four races are "automatics". Then come the kids getting in via regional qualifiers. But everyone comes to Finals with the points they accumulated from the first four PA Cups. These points carry over toward the PA State Champion title. I don't know what this year's quota for PA will be, but at least that racer will go to JO's. There's no other realistic way for a PA racer to make JO's. skimom
I'm thinking the 'dude might do better to travel to other states for USSA points, rather than travel across PA, to go to cra@@y little hills, for the PA program. What do you think, '999? Looking towards the future, is he better chasing USSA points or dogging around with this PA stuff?

What do you think, '999? Looking towards the future, is he better chasing USSA points or dogging around with this PA stuff? They are just two different goals. I'm going to gently encourage Ty to race for the PA State Title, with that as a goal. Big fish in a little pond, sort of thing. Have fun and let the points come down in slush cups. But I certainly wouldn't object if she wants to spend every weekend up north, finishing 40th and getting decent points. It's a tough road on a kid's psych, though. There's a great kid from that started on the CAT Team that quit just to ski races up north. He had a great attitude, though, and could handle DFL's week after week. It's got to be up to 'Dude. Racing has to be fun. Goals can be lofty, but they have to be attainable. Confidence is a close second to skill in racing. Will getting top 10's in PA build confidence for late season races in VT? Or is he better off racing up north all season and reaching a comfort level? You don't necessarily sacrifice all chances for great points by skiing the Cups. skidude
Ski, great post... Just so you know, the days of supper low slush cups are over. USSA made a rule that will make all the slush cups have a minimum penatly of 25 points...Which is a lot better than PA races, no question, but after 200 people ski the courses, I will probably have the same total points. the only thing to do is lower my points more this season, so in the slush cups I'm not starting 200th!!!! If most of the team is going to the PA Cups (which they probably will) then its always fun...Even if you don't have a great race...So I'll probably end up doing that. The lowest Holimont ever got was around 14 for boys, so it's not too much different. But I bet those races were p*ssing off some Rocky Mountain club coaches, though. But some day, every racer needs to uncork one and come out of nowhere, like Ivica Kostelic winning his first World Cup with bib 64. One race and he never saw another bib higher than 30. One of them this year was 4.2 or something...But then they bumped it up to 50..>I guess last year the course was legal, but this year it wasn't. I had a few killer runs at Elk, and everyone was like what, where did that come from...So hopefully I can have a few killer runs whereever I go this year

skidude
Last year they had the 4 PA Cups and a regional qualifier (least for most places) CB's regional qualifyer (and blues, and bb/forst's) was the SL at frost.

I am confused - With Ridge being a J4.... He doesnt earn points correct? So, gus mentioned just one week ago that The PA cup was by invitation. I need someone to help me schedule out a path for Ridge this season. It sounds like he just needs to make sure his entry is on time for the PA Cup and he can focus on what ever else he needs - in other words, no qualifiying.. skidude
No points for J4s...As long as he does pretty well in races I know if there is any qualification for his age group (not sure if there is or not) but if he skis like he skis, he will get in them no problem. Ski
Ridge will be looking to qualify for the J4 State Championships at Roundtop, at the end of February. J4's are scored by best run finishes, so a racer only needs to complete one fast run. Ridge has a couple of years to go before even thinking about points. The USSA points, that is. The earliest is second year J3, which was only started a couple of years ago---it used to only be J1/2's. It gives top J3 racers a chance to better position themselves with the ability to earn lower bib numbers when their J2 race careers really begin. A J1/2 race course sometimes ruts out so bad that even dropping five bib numbers can be huge. Invitation---in weird ski-speak---means meeting all the qualifications, including age. That's also why when your kid goes to college and makes Carnival, it's a really good thing. Ridge will be able to qualify for J4 State's, not PA Cups; PA Cups are J1/2 only. The J4 State's are also "by invitation", which means meeting all the qualifications.
Papasteeze
OK - Well we are all pumped for race season on the snow to start Saturday. Last year it was the end of January after getting back from Tahoe before he could make any gate turns. Adam - if there is no school here locally - I will be heading up Friday Morn with kids in tow.
