My company has free tickets to both and Bob & I have a Friday off in February. I was going to do a poll to see which you liked but I thought it was asking for punishment. I can just hear it now.. Bell just has slow lifts, but it is never busy, which is good Quote
Papasteeze Posted January 25, 2006 Report Posted January 25, 2006 I have been to Belleayre 4 times. Every time was a positive experience. Lots of varied terrain to choose from and some of the friendliest staff I have met. Some info about Platekill from www.nelsap.com Ski Plattekill is a terrific medium size ski area in Roxbury, NY. It skis much larger than its 1000-1100' vertical would suggest. There's something for everyone at this mountain - from wide open steeps, to narrow chutes, to easy meandering beginner trails. Its uncrowded, affordable, and friendly - what else could you want? Plattekill is open Fri-Sun, all of vacation weeks, and whenever 12" or more of snow falls on weekdays. This helps to preserve the natural snow trails that would be skied off otherwise. Today, the mountain has greatly expanded, and is now on two peaks. The left peak (facing north) has a new (used from Belleayre) Halldouble chair and the now disused T-bar. The terrain is mostly natural skiing, with limited snowmaking but decent grooming. There are limitless possibilities on the north face. Overlook is a narrow beginner trail, about 1.5 miles long. Cat Track, Twist, Ridge Run, the Cliffs, and Horseshoe are all narrow squiggles from the summit. They cut back and forth the fairly steep mountain. Northface, Giant Slalom, Plunge, and Freefall are all steep, down the fall line awesome slopes. Quote

Ski Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 You are totally a guy. Anyway, my 2 cents on Belleayre vs. Plattekill? It's been a few years since I've been to Plattekill, but it's always an interesting experience. Not a lot of grooming or snowmaking make the steeps pretty much impassable by a typical intermediate. And I know, since I've taken intermediate skiers there. To me, Plattekill is either a really cool place to live near (we almost bought a farmhouse near there), or a cool place to visit once or twice, just for the experience. Belleayre is also a page out of the '50's when it comes to atmosphere, with some faster lifts and better grooming. Belleayre is one of my favorite places to ski---sort of the anti-Hunter: friendly people and a layed back style. If you haven't done either, I'd try Belleayre first. If your skiing abilities vary, then an expert can ski the front diamonds and meet you midway down the mountain (for the most part). If it's going to snow a lot, then you might want to give one of Plattekills Powder Daize a shot. But I'd strongly recommend Belleayre over Plattekill. Quote

I looked at the mountain's website and the hotel website and both look pretty cool. I would say I am a mid level intermediate. I can ski blacks well, but not all day. It looks like Bellayare is mostly (50%) intermediate anyway. Thanks again. Quote
