Papasteeze Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 is anyone going out to the nastar championship in steamboat? There are 10 of us (family) going - I know about 100 others from various places that will also be there. If you can do it..... Go !!!!!!!!!!!!! not to race and win but go to have a good time and get some racing in!!!! Park City was really good last year for all the different events. This is my fourth trip to Steamboat and I know that town will put on a good show. They have a huge amount of snow now and it is still snowing. Conditions should be the absolute best. Book now if you are considering it. Quote
skidude Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 Words of advise... Don't go for the racing. Go for fun Quote

Papasteeze Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Words of advise... Don't go for the racing. Go for fun Why not go for the racing if you have some talent? Me and my dad are staying in the Thunderhead hotel 100 yards from the Gondola!!!!!!!! We are staying at Gondola run.. right under the gondola Quote
skidude Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Why not go for the racing if you have some talent? I have went for 3 years, and it has always been a pretty poorly run race. Great pacesetters, great mountains, just IMO the races have always had much room for improvement on the administration end. Quote

Great pacesetters, great mountains, just IMO the races have always had much room for improvement on the administration end. I don't have the experience with racing that you have but it seemed much more organized than the confusing stuff of the USAA race registrations that I have been subjected to with Ridge. I only know how the 9-10 year olds were ran. On the contrary. When you register at the Nationals you are given detailed itenarys of the races where when and what. I always have questions I have had to ask at each USAA race and I still have a bazillion questions about post season stuff. Seems to be kept a secret, where as the information on the Nationals at Nastar is readily available with people eager to answer questions when asked, unlike the one-liners I have been getting this season with the USSA. Seeding or Bib numbers is the only vague thing at Nastar Nationals. I think one of the most beneficial things about the Nastar nationals is getting out to see how many people in so many different categories and age groups from so many different places rather than the same faces you see at the local races. Besides, anyone who travels that far is serious about the national race and not just doing it because it something to do that is available in your back yard. There are new stories to hear and lots of great people to meet. They are different, more fun, more welcoming, more encouraging. It is a totally different atmosphere, more positive than the local racing scene. Just my opinion. As far as the technical difficulty aspect goes. THAT is BS... if you are top at Nastar, chances are you are top at USAA - exception is the 13 to 20 year old divisions and I believe that is because the excellent junior racers are busy with post season racing or are discouraged to not spend time with the recreational racers or they allocate the expense to other places. NJSkiFamily Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 My kids qualified but we busted our budget with two trips to Smuggler's. Also it doesn't coincide with school break. So no go for us Isn't Steamboat the resort that is family friendly? Quote
Papasteeze Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 I met a lot of J4 parents that are going to Steamboat this weekend at ROundtop - Looks like another good PA representation. Quote

skimom Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Have fun. You will have a blast. I agree with 'dude though - at Park City the course maintainance was nil - we raced in ruts up to our armpits. It's OK for the experts, but for most recreational racers it's survival-mode racing. Quote
Papasteeze Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 You're not representing PA though, are you? You're representing Breckonridge, right? Uhhh.... looks like you know more than I do. We will be "hanging" with PA people, therefore PA represent! Quote

Actully, the last 2 years they said something like "all odd bibs will race the green course first run, then the yellow course second"...So I looked at the green course first...Well guess who raced the yellow course first... STuff like that won't happen in USSA races. Also 'Mum and I used the nationals as an 'excuse' to go out west (hence the week we took of free skiing before the race) Just my opinion... Quote
Papasteeze Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 . Seeding or Bib numbers is the only vague thing at Nastar Nationals. Yeah thats what I said... BTW the RT race was excellently organized!! I didn't see anything there I can complain about, can you believe it? Quote

NJSkiFamily Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Couple of questions..... Is the championship always held the same weekend every year? Is it always held out west? Quote
skidude Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Couple of questions..... Is the championship always held the same weekend every year? Is it always held out west? It has usually been the last week in March.... Its always been held out west that I know of. They need about 6 trails all closed for atleast 2 days, and all the mountains that have that kind of terain to give who would be sure to have snow then (Am. ski comp. resorts) do not run Nastar....(I think) Quote
zaldon Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 im tryin to get rents to give me the ok Quote
NJSkiFamily Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Thanks skidude. I hadn't realized the scale needed to run a championship. That would really limit where in the East it could be held. My kids would really love to go one year (daughter qualified at the silver level) but we would really need to plan it in advance - you know how schools are getting uptight about taking kids out. ColoradoHigh Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 This year my spring break is in April, last year, March. I am taking the week off for Steamboat Colorado . I had to sign a form that, I had to give to my teachers to put my grade on it, and then the principle would sign it as excused, or unexcused. I am EXCUSED ! Quote
