Rideburton Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Has anyone ever tried to make snow in the summer. Like crushing ice or anything. I was gonna try to do something like that with my friends so yeah... Quote
adrian Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 its been done. Â an ice skating rink is better though. Quote
Papasteeze Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Ice skating rink snow by the pick up load... Quote
Bobert540 Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 as stated above ice rinks are the best and it's free...all you need is a shovel, a trailer, and a few friends..... Quote
skimom Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Some resort in NH bought a gaint snow cone maker for summer snow... it cost around a million. They were supposed to use for summer skiing, early winter opening, etc. But, I haven't heard much about it lately... Quote

From what I heard they had bought technology that made it possible to actually make snow (not shave it) in high-temp situations. I was suspicious when I heard about it, and let down when I saw the results. As far as I can remember, they turned the guns on once to hold a mid-summer railjam and it looked no better than an ice shaver. They had claims that they were going to be one of the only year-round resorts. I guess they were true, provided that "year round" meant December to March with a mudpatch in the middle of July. Quote
ski_unit Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 yeah, tenneys thing was a total bust. i exchanged a few emails with one of the managers there about it (cause my friends and i were gonna roadtrip up if they had another summer day) and apparently rather than use the system themselves, they rent it out to other places such as atlantic city, for some reason or another. so i guess it works, but its just not cost effective for them to use Quote

That was it. I was in the area when they opened, and can confirm your impressions of it being like a giant snow cone. Well, nice try. The theory was that it could make snow at 90 degrees. Unfortunatley, they just couldn't keep it from melting at that temp... maybe as technology improves - heat extractors running under the surface of a run, etc. Quote

There's a ton of bacteria in a ton of places people don't know about. It's interesting if you look that stuff up.  So to get the "ice rink snow" you just like pull up to an ice rink and are like, heyyy pal were taking your snow, and start shoveling? I've got like two rinks that are near me, but their like 25 min away. Think it will melt in that time? Quote
toast21602 Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 it should be fine. you dont realize how long it takes to melt. me and justo had a rail jam for his brother's graduation party last year and the snow was still around the next morning... and that was one truck load in the middle of june. adrian Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 ice shavings are putrid but undeniably the best option. Quote
GNU_rider Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 My friend and I hit some rails in the local area last summer compliments of an ice skating rink near my house so I say grab that "snow" and take some runs! Quote
firebirds98 Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Yea there are rinks are all over the place, well unless you live in center city Philadelphia and the closest rink besides the UPenn 1932 is the Wachovia Center and Spectrum, Im pretty sure your not getting any of there shavings Quote
ridesnwboards Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 ice rink snow all the way....or if u have the money buy that sand-fill carpet that those kids had in the park forum earlier in the season Quote
Justo8484 Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 hmmm i forgot about the upenn rink... the flyers skate zones melt all their snow. Quote
Schif Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 hmmm i forgot about the upenn rink... the flyers skate zones melt all their snow. Thats a waste Quote
mogulmasher Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 For those interested the web site for the system Tenny Mountain had is www.snowmagic.com. Definitely not for the creek when you make no commitment to stay open with snow on 98% of the trials covered. The Blue season pass is looking better all the time!!! Quote
