bigdaddyk Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 (edited) I just watched a segment on the news that said that NOAA is predicting an El Nino winter. For us they said that this means it could be a warmer than normal winter . I thought last season was bad, this would blow . Edited September 19, 2006 by bigdaddyk Quote

ColoradoHigh Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Actually we are all wrong. Accuweather.com states that it will be a cold winter for us, with one or two maybe even three major Nor'Easters! I can't wait. Accuweather Quote

Accuweather.com states that it will be a cold winter for us, with one or two maybe even three major Nor'Easters! I can't wait. Accuweather But they are predicting it to start out warmer than normal. I'd rather it start cold and get warm, instead of the other way around. Quote

Park lovers hate the midwinter thaw, so from our standpoint, all is well! For myself, I'm just hopin' for it to be balls cold from November till April. Amen! Quote

Dan- Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 (edited) Yep. I know. I am so excited for this winter!!!!! We are supposidly gonna have a better overall winter then the west!!!! You are definatly smoking some GREAT stuff over there. Most resorts in the west have averages well above 300 inches of snowfall each year. We are lucky if we see 30 inches.. So out west has about 10x better winter then us, plus they have much bigger hills... Accuweather also says that, even though we may get nor'easters, the canadian air has to come down at just the right time to turn them into a snow storm, and not just more rain... You need to learn alittle bit about weather, and climates. Edited September 20, 2006 by KnuckleDragger Quote
method9455 Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 maybe he means percentage wise. An extra 25% snow for us is like, 8 inchs. 25% less snow for Utah is like 13 feet less. Quote
Dan- Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 There've been ski seasons where Northern Vermont...Sugarbush northward has received more snowfall than Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana ski areas. It's rare but it happens occasionally. It's not apples to apples though. 350 inches of snowfall at Jay Peak isn't as good as 350 inches of snowfall in the Rockies. That's because even during a great eastern snow year, there is the dreaded January thaw and often a few other thaws were temperatures are well above freezing all the way up to the Canadian border along with mid-winter rain. My first trip to Jackson Hole was in January and it rained a tiny bit near the base and the locals were saying that was the first time it's rained in January in Jackson Hole in years. Of course the next morning there was light and dry sparkly snow and below zero temperatures. The 1997-98 ski season started off fabulously in northern Vermont with over 100 inches of snow before New Years at Stowe and Jay Peak. I went up to Jay Peak with my buddy Ben and it poured for two days straight and they lost over a foot of base each day..the snow was the definition of rotton...so we went to Montreal and got stuck in the worst Ice Storm in recent history...4 inches of ice...The ice storm damage killed alot of the best tree skiing runs at Stowe and Mad River Glen... Your forgetting about the PNW, places like Baker, have been averaging about 600inches a year. In 98-99 baker got 1140 inches of snow, which is the currect record for any mountain in the world. Quote
