I'd say Belleayre would be a great bet November 24th...

I hit up Belleayre at the end of the 2004-2005 season with a couple people from PASR. It was a good time, but unless they get lots of terrain open early, I think the better picks are windham or hunter. I did windham last year, so barring any lopsided terrain/price differences I'm shooting for hunter on 11-24. Although, with pops tryign to dish out the cash for a cabin (at denton) perhaps I can get him motivated to make that overnight stay worthwhile by making the trip to vermont. Any way you slice it, I'm trying to snowboard on my birthday, and denton is not the way to reach that goal. I just need a little more concrete evidence.

Yeah, I've experienced hunter early in the season too. Hunter I'd have to say from a terrain POV is a little nicer. I think the crowd situation (and trail openings) were just as bad at windham, and bellayre had similar terrain open with the slow lifts. No doubt the personality of the crowd was better at windham (and probobly better still at bellearye) but I'll be going to hunter to change the pace. Plus Zaldon has yet to go to hunter and wants to give it a whirl.

Opps... forgot about spring time at hunter. Well considering that, maybe bellearye is back in the picture.

Didn't we already beat this to death back when those Hunter guys invaded our board?

I honestly have no idea what your talking about.. I wasn't on this board this time last year. All i did was post that denton's slope was 28 degree's instead of 66...

Back in the day about a year ago we had some unfriendly hunter people come on the board. Yeeh, big argument.

Email from Denton Staff...

We do claim on the website that we have the steepest, and that is going to be updated to one of the steepest. When the resort was orginially built The Army core of Engineers developed the slope and at that time it was the steepest in the east. However, since then Stowe and Kilington both have slopes that compare to this slope. The 66 degree is in the first 1/4 of the slope and bottom 1/4 of slope the middle section does come out from the 66 degree. We do get a lot of questions about this, my best advice is this winter come out and ski it, or come this summer and mountain bike our hill and you can look at the slope for yourself. Please note you won't be able to go over it on your mountain bike. I hope this helps, we have tried to locate the plans the engineers made that gave the factual information but have not come up with it.

Shawn

Maybe the middle is 28 degrees? Who knows....

Maybe when the army developed it the pitch was 66 and since erosion has mellowed the pitch. Either way still looking for those opening dates if anyone has any clue. I've been hammering google for a couple of days with no avail.

I'm not longer the Rep for Greek Peak. I now run a ski shop in Corning New York and have taken my passion for the industry to the retail side to determine wether I want to make a career in marketing ski resorts or working with equipment. Now that I'm no longer affiliated with Greek Peak I can speak the truth on a lot of things that were censored by the man. So here goes!

Denton will most likely not be open on the 24th of November. It will take an act of the snow gods to have them open by that weekend. But we can hope.

If your dad is getting a cabin in Denton you are not totally out of luck. Within a couple hour drive from your cabin in Denton there should be a few resorts open.

Greek Peak will most likely make the push and be open that weekend - They usually open the weekend after hunter and it's not crowded. They also have REALLY good ski and stay packages that start around 70 bucks per person (lift ticket, breakfast, and based on double occupancy) so that might be something to consider. Check out www.greekpeak.net for more details

Also pretty close is Swain Mountain. Pretty small but should be up and running that weekend and they usually push to have some sort of a part up and running early on, and they do almost no advertising which means very little crowds. Goto www.Swain.com

Another good bet will be Bristol Mountain. Another Snowmaking powerhouse and will have some decent terrain open early. Www.bristolmountain.com However they will most likely be crowded with the crowds they draw from Rochester. But they have a high speed quad that gets you to the top of 1200 vertical feet in 4 1/2 minutes. You can never go wrong there.

And your best bet would be Holiday Valley. They'll be open for sure, and probably not as crowded as Hunter, Windham or Bellayre.

Denton's "steepest in the east" claim is quite a long shot, but the run is pretty gnarly and the gladed run Extreme has been cleaned up and thinned of all the brush this summer. The past few years (the snow has sucked and its been closed most of the time) it hasn't been all that skiable - but this year that should be a really fun run if we get some snow.

Denton is under new management and they are really working hard to turn that mountain around. Look for big things from Denton in the next few years!

Anyone know the pitch on ligthtning? Is it comperable to Denton's trail?

Denton's is steeper and has trees! :wiggle

or the average is 28???

I could see the average being 28. It mellows towards the bottom but the first 15-20 turns are as good as I've ever had in PA!

Ha, yeah, your GF straightlined WL on her first day ever, right?

Glenn: Denton's old owners had been trying to market early openings and sell packages to race teams, since they have a dorm that sleeps a bunch of people. But it just never worked out. 'Dude's head coach had promised them a few years that he'd get his team out in November, but it just never happened. Then Denton moved away from hosting PA Cups and, now, who knows. The cabins are awesome, with tons of room and really high ceilings, but they aren't exactly ski-in/ski-out...more like a few hundred yard walk, depending on which cabin you get.

Denton is far...without looking, I'd guess the Catskills are closer to you.

And Belleayre DOES have a high speed lift...brand spankin' NEW.
