Don't know if anyone knows this but Blues tenative opening day is 12/1

That's all good and well, except we actually rely on the weather around here to open, so a tentative opening date is a moot point.

It still is refreshing to hear that they are pushing to open so early however. It means they care about us and want to get going ASAP.

They could have proposed a 12/15 date, but they didn't. So in my opinion it is a good sign that they will be figting to open first! Hooray!

Jeff, im pretty sure every ski mountain in the world relies on the weather to open...

It's still something good to hear. People are happy when the mountain could be open as early as 12/1.. Why such negativity.

Cause the fact is that if every mtn around here could open on 12/1, they would.

And that's not true, Alta, Big Mtn, for example, are restricted by permits, and they actually have set opening days, when they really could open way before. I've hiked Alta before they were open, and there was plenty of coverage to be open. Not every mtn relies on the weather to pick their opening date. The snow will always be there on Alta's opening day.

They still rely on weather though. If it didn't snow, and it was warm would they still open.. Dont think so. They may have a set opening date every year because of permits, but they still need the weather to help them out as far as snowfall goes... They are just in a better location, with a much higher altitude, so of course they will have snow by the time there ready to open. But weather is still the biggest factor.

Had they announced a date of 12/15, they would push for 12/1. Now since they're announcing 12/1, they may be pushing for sooner.

I actually agree. If they are pushing for such an early opening date, they might shoot for Thanksgiving. If the temps are right to blow the white stuff out of the guns, then it might just happen. :rock

I like to hear it, but I doubt it will be then. Unless of course we have a nice early winter :rock

It's only 1 day earlier then last year...

Most mountains are pretty much ready to go way way way before they actually open, as far as our standards go by. Colorado, Montana, etc all get the first snowfall sometime around early september, and they continue from then. By late september/early october they could be opened close to 100% with just natural snowfall, but they still do blow snow in some lower altitude spots (like the base of lifts, etc). They're just restricted by permits and wildlife concerns (bears and shit), operating costs, etc. They are almost never worried about coverage. Compared to the mountains around here (in terms of coverage at opening day, etc), they have just about the same conditions in September. Here in PA we rely mostly on cold temps to blow snow ourselves, as little storms here and there don't really impact that much. We don't get dumpings and dumpings of snow in the winter so resorts mainly rely on snowguns. Some resorts out west usually don't even blow snow on most of their trails.

So if weather was the main factor out west, then all the resorts would be opened in late september.

If i'm not mistaken thats the story with Big Mountian right Sib? You guys have to worry about opening and closing because of bears, not snow.

Wrong. Most resorts in CO, MT, do not get that much snowfall in sept, early october, hence the reason that there are only 2 open, and they are open because they blew snow. A-basin has a few trails, same with loveland, no were near 100%. All those trip reports you see on other forums, are coming from peaks as high as 13000 to 14000 ft high. This was also a freak year for colorado, and Berthoud, and loveland passes have been getting blasted with snow. But resorts have no were near enough snowfall to be open 100%.

So your saying weather has absolutly nothing to do with resorts opening? So if it didn't snow and it was 80 degrees those resorts would still open...

If they don't have to worry about coverage, why are A-basin, and Loveland only open about 15-20% and it's almost november.. Do some research.

Yea and you should see the pictures of the guys skis in the trip reports afterwards. Two words, rock skis. They get 2 or 3 feet of powder, that packs down to like 6" of base if you ran a snowcat over it, which we all know is not deep enough to open.

you hurt my feelings

you had nothing to do with an argument that was dead, why you even bother getting involved? o yea, thats right....cause you wanted to start shit with me, like you've been doing since day one. for example :"you're just as guilty as the terrorists for supproting the war on terror." this is just one example of the many stabs you take at me.

i don't deny anything i have said on this message board. i took stabs at papa and i fought it until the mods closed it. thickheaded? maybe, but at least i back my arguments with valid facts. you are more then likely some high school kid who knows nothing about the real world like i once was. i don't blame you for that i just blame you for being an ignorant drone. i know your type. i was once in your shoes.

You should understand that NO arguments are"dead" on a message board. I just read it for the first time 10min ago. Dosen't change that fact that you made an ignorant comment. Please, grow up a little.

In other words get used to my stabs or mature a little so i don't have to.

i disagree but dont feel like arguing anymore

Understandable, not everyone is as thickheaded and relenteless as myself.

Also, i'm not raggin on you to simply be a dick. I rag on people so THEY realize they are out of line and can maybe learn how to handle themselves better in similiar situations in the future. I don't have a problem with you, just want you to realize that thinking a little before you speak/type is benificial.
