Team Camelback Continues Jack Frost Success

Team Camelback had another impressive weekend at Jack Frost this past weekend. The J4,5's led by the hard charging Kelly Rowland took first place among the J4 girls and posted the 2nd and 3rd fastest time among both boys and girls. Following her was Merrit Harlan (4th), who is new to the team and comes to us from the Mass. circuit last year. Merrit jumped two spot after her second run to hit the podium. Dana LeNeveu also picked several spots after her second run to finish 3rd among the J5 girls.

In the boys category, Ridge Larick (J4) laid down the fastest time in the first run only to have a miscue on second to last gate on his second run to finish a respectable 5th. Jake Bufo(J5), DNF in his first run but then came back in his second run to post a time almost two seconds faster then the next competitor. We will be watching for these two to have greater success with a little better racing luck.

Thanks to coaches Keith, Walt and Mike who helped our kids read the proper line and prepared them for the races. Good job too all!

Actually, whomever wrote the race press release for CB didn't really give Ridge enough credit...

In J4/5 racing, individual runs count toward post season and the kid's combined times do not. For example, it's nice to get a podium with solid two run times, but it's better to win one run and crash in run two.

An example: if one racer finishes third in both runs, he'd score 120 points toward Derby (3rd place=60 points). Then, if other top racers had each won a run or finished second, but they both crash out in run two, they don't make a podium, BUT they earn 100 points for their first place run. And only your best runs for the season count. So the kid that "won" for the day will only carry forward 60 point runs, while the other kids will move on with a 100 point race, which sets them up better when more races are finished.

J4/5 individual race runs are scored on the World Cup scale. So Ridge earned 100 points by winning the first run, then 29 points for a 9th place second run. And to qualify for Derby, they take your "best of one less than half", which means if you race eight total runs, you divide those results in half, then drop the lowest remaining score---leaving your THREE best runs to be counted toward Derby. So Ridge has a 100 point run 'in the bank', then his 29 point run is a decent one that may or may not just get thrown out if he has better runs.

It's a good system, IMO, because it takes all the pressure off kids as young as 7 or 8 from having to finish both runs to have a concrete accomplishment. It also teaches kids to 'go for it' on each run.

Again, congrats, Ridge.

Thanks, Ski -

Nips and I were in Steamboat last week. Ridges 1st run to me looked slow, so I was surprised at the results. His second run, I thought was actually a better run (faster) until he glazed over or something and hockey stopped the next to last gate. There were 3 other racers there who must have had the first race jitters because they looked to be really cooking, they just didn't hold it together. I hope that his scores rekindle a drive to continue racing into the J3's even for just the fun of the race, maybe no team training, just do the races? Next races are slaloms which he seems to enjoy more than the faster GS which is a recent change for him after Breck last year.

Oh! and that Kelley is a smooth racer, she makes it look really easy. She is really blossoming, keep an eye on her!

I assume Ridge will be racing at CB this weekend?

Since someone volunteered me to tend a gate, he doesn't have anywhere to go, so he might as well race. :) He likes slalom, hope he holds it together and goes easy.
