AtomicSkier Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 400 ft can make a differnece in marginal temps, though. The same can be said with inversions. I like the snow at JFBB, but its so slow. Grippy, but slow. If they had some pitch, it would be fine, but slow snow + no pitch = no fun. Quote
jordan Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 1900 ft at the top of JF, vs 1500 ft at the top of Booter. It's not that big of a difference. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the size. They have a lot of snowmaking (all relative) for such a limited amount of terrain, which means they can focus all their efforts on the whole mountain, constantly. Bigger places like CB and Blue, can't. oh , i thought we were talking about BB which is 2275 at the summit. Probably the highest ski area in the poconos If they had some pitch, it would be fine, but slow snow + no pitch = no fun. never skied east mountain ehh? Quote
method9455 Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Yea its about 3 degrees F per 1000 ft all things being equal so 500 feet = 1.5 degrees, that is quite a bit on marginal nights. Plus colder water at JF from the river helps. As for pitch - I would say East Mountain at JF feels equal in length to the stuff at Blue and is as steep if not steeper. Blue has a huge run out at the bottom that kills almost all of their vert advantage. You can definetly lap more at Blue in a shorter time because of the lifts, but I wouldn't say that you are getting more quality steep turns at Blue than you would at east mountain JF. Quote
DHarrisburg Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Northstar has a mid-mountain depth of eighteen inches right now. Eighteen inches. Quote
AtomicSkier Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 never skied east mountain ehh? Um yes. That's all we skied on the PASR day...and I took some "warm up" laps there today...can't really warm up when you only get to make 1.5 turns on GS skis because you're already at the lift Quote
Papasteeze Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Could it be because it's so freakin small? I'm pretty sure it has to do with the size. They have a lot of snowmaking (all relative) for such a limited amount of terrain, which means they can focus all their efforts on the whole mountain, constantly. Bigger places like CB and Blue, can't. JFBB has more firepower per square acre than Blue or CB. if blue or CB invested in thier snowmaking at the same ratio as JFBB then they would be able produce the same results. doesn't matter if it is 50 acres or 500 acres. the fact of the matter is that they are more interested in coverage quickly than the other resorts. exception: BC Quote
method9455 Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 The steep part of challenge and falls/Razors is 900+ vert...actually 923 from the summit to the end of shuttle/bottom of falls...and Jack Frost is 600 vert...not comparable.. I'm not so sure about that, weren't we talking the other day about how they measure the summit of JF to be the lodge area but in reality east mountain is about 100 feet higher - get off the lift at the top and you go down about a hundred feet to the top. That would make it 700 feet and to me it feels like a more intense run than either challenge or razors - you might get more vert at Blue but I think that run is more interesting at JF. The question is will 1 good trail be more interesting after a day on it then a bunch of trails? I don't think so but it was sure fun early season this year when no one had anything comparable open. stever2003 Posted February 19, 2007 Report Posted February 19, 2007 I remember about 6 years back, BB had listed an 8 foot base on their website. This sounded ridiculous until I got to the mountain, and there was 8 feet of snow underneath of me. I fell off the side of what I think was called Merry Widow then...I had to climb up a few feet to get back onto the trail, but not before digging my gear out of the snow (I lost a pole in there too).
