Well, thought out last week, I was getting into denial about the conditions at Jackson Hole. But now, I am looking at daily pictures on their website, they are getting snow every night at the top of the mountain, and its cold every night up there. So it will keep the snow, and base intact.

I know they only have 79 of 116 trails open, but thats plenty. And its better then 30 trails at Blue. So I guess you guys that were telling me to suck it up, and go, I am listening to you, and going to take it the best way I can. What ever the conditions, I will enjoy it for you guys in PA.

So this thread is for the Trip Reports I will post every day I am skiing. I will include as many pictures as possible. I will be as descriptive as possible as well.

I leave in less then 24 hours, and I have to get up tomorrow morning at 4:15. My plane leaves from Philly at around 8:00 AM. I am going to Denver for a connection, then to Jackson Hole.

On the last day of the trip, I will be making the trek in the morning, to Yellow Stone National Park for some sightseeing to close out the season...

Trip report day one....

I got free lift tickets with my boarding pass, and we skied about 6 runs in two hours. It was very mushy, and slushy, especially at the bottom...The top was pure joy. Packed powder, and cold.

Word out on the mountain is that there will be 4-6 even a foot of snow tonight :rock ....

In actual deep powder, no I don't know how. But in like a foot or less of powder, thats good for me. But I don't have the right ski's so, I guess that puts me out of the running for pow skiing.

But seriously, the top mountain was excellent compared to the slush at the bottom of the mountain. Tomorrow is a brand new day, with groomed snow, and colder temperatures....

Oh yeah, it was a Gaper Fools Day yesterday for April Fools Day. On one of the trails, the locals were dressed in 60's and 70's gear were throwing snowballs up to the people on the lift. Funny site. People were doing the turkey tuck all the time. People were dressed as a chicken, a fat woman with a thong on, and it was a guy wearing it. His legs were bare, and HE had a thong on. Pretty funny right there. There was a snowboarder that was wearing just a speedo :rofl , there was a skier wearing just a thong, although I didn't see him, some local told me that skier had a cut from the snow all they up his side starting from his side.

We got about 6 inches of snow in the town last night. More on the mountain probably....

So, I came back from the mountain at around 2:00 pm. I was skiing from 9:00am. It was SOOOOO NICE! Over a foot of fresh powder, snowed through out the morning, then stopped, and as I was going to my hotel, it picked up again. They are calling for more snow tonight....

I was going off the Casper Chair most of the time, and I also did like 10 runs off a quad I can't think of the name though.

At first, the powder was very heavy, and I wasn't used to so much of it. But I got the hang of skiing powder. But this altitude is killing my flow. I am getting winded every 5-6 turns, and I have to stop and rest. And my feet are killing me because of my boots. I think its time for me to get new boots.

you need to engage in some aerobic activity when you get home so you dont have the lung capacity of a 4 year old... especially if you plan on going out west again. believe me, it helps. i am not effected at all by altitude when i go out west.

just a recommendation

do you know how to ski?.... in powder? because it can be "pure joy".

Pure Joy to say the least...

This is very true.

Also drink ALOT of water.. Helps alittle bit.

I'm planning to continue riding my 90's race bike, and go to the gym more often. I drank a ton of water since I got here. I chugged about 2 bottles of water in an hour....And I was still thirsty after a run...

I just got in from another great morning/afternoon session at Jackson Hole. Since it snowed almost over a foot, and it cleared up last night, it got down to the single digits or teens last night at the mountain, the snow got all the moisture pulled out of it making it very dry and soft. For my first run, I did the run right off the Bridger Gondola, to the Thunder Quad, and then I skied to the Sublette Chair for Groomers Choice run, Randevouz. IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE! Perfectly groomed, soft silky snow. It was a dream....

There were so many trails that were groomed to perfection. All had the silky fast, soft snow. It couldn't get any better...Or could it??? It stated awesome at the top, but when I was skiing to the lodge, it turned into a slush puppy. Tomorrow, I am hoping for more of the same.

I will post pictures when I get home after thy trip.... :rock

EDIT:

I didn't get winded at all today! I felt great. I wasn't tired except when I decided that I'm done for the day. No more Altitude Sickness for me...

Not sure it will necessarily help that much, I'm not exactly in good shape aerobically but I don't get affected by the altitude either (at least not on the two trips I've done) but one of my companions to Utah this year who is a fit-freak was a heaving wreck for the first 2 days.

I've heard that altitude can affect anyone in a random manner, just because you dont get hit once (or many times) doesn't mean the next trip wont nail you.

Best advice I've received is drink tons of water, very little beer and coffee, eat plenty of carb and protein rich foods and dont push yourself too much the first day you arrive. All of this came from people on here before I went last year and it's really worked out fine for me, big thanks to PASR.

Oh, and Chip, with a foot of powder, what the hell were you doing on groomers?

Glad you had (are having?) and awesome time :rock

X2. If you went out west for groomers, I've got a nice pair or skiblades waiting for you when you get back to PA. :tinfoil:

Glad to hear you're having a great time though Chippy. I wish I was out there.

Hey! I prefer groomers.

I don't mind a few inches of powder, but anything around a foot is a little much for me. I also like the silky smooth feeling of fresh natural snow, groomed over. My knees and skis don't like deep powder :banghead .

that is all you have ever skied. once you go out west and get dumped on, you wont want to touch another groomer unless it is on your way back to the lift.

i dont see any point in going out west to ski groomers. you can do that anywhere.

This powder was heavy. I've never skied TRUE light, fluffy, in your face powder. This kind was not it. So, I guess I just don't know how to ski in powder. But the groomers are still nice. What so bad about them?

Skiing is skiing. No matter where you are at, what trails you go on, and what kind of snow you ski on.
