phillycore Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 Wow what a difference a few days of crappy weather makes... We were a little on the slow side at work and my supervisor called me into the office. He then tells me that he was wondering if I'd like to take a half day today as I was the only person there that was going to finish their work early and they had nothing for me to do. I was like, ummmm let me make a phone call. So I called the wife and asked (yes asked, once again she wears the pants...blah blah she's hot as hell and I'm a fat dude, letting her wear the pants has kept me married for over 11 years now and VERY happy in the bedroom dept.) She said no problem as long as I was taking Michael (my 12 year old) with me. I then told her to call Mike and tell him I'd be home at 12:30 and to be ready to rock... he had a half day from school for parent teacher conferences so that was cool. I got done work, drove home and loaded up the Eclipse and we rolled out. Got about 6 miles away and SHIT!! I forgot my damn jacket, U Turn where possible.... yeah yeah that's what the damn GPS kept telling me all the way back home to retrieve my jacket. (Like I really need a GPS to tell me how to get to a mountain I've been to 100 F'n times, but I like using it because it tells me estimated time of arrival and all that jazz..) So we're back en route to BB. We arrive at the parking lot right at 3pm and there's like 15 cars in the lot. We pull into the spot and run down to get our lift tickets. Michaels jacket is blue and white so we tried to do the red white and blue thing, but no luck they not doing it any longer... oh wel it's only $15 anyway... We pay the girl and go get geared up. Holy Crap it was colder than anticipated for shizzle, not to mention that thin cover is a severe understatement. It's amazing what a week of bad weather can do to a slope. There was literally half of the snow there compared to last Sunday when I was there.. grass coming through in spots, and hard to not get in the way of the jib honks doing their thing on the boxes, and rails. Not to mention that this was Michaels first time on real skis, and his first time ever with poles. (my old poles which were WAY too long for him, but this was a last minute thing and I haven't bought him poles yet..I'm 6'1" and he's pushing 5'0) He's not a kid with a lot of confidence although he acts like he's GOD 99% of the time... He tried his best and I was pretty proud of him once he got done his whole baby routine after falling the first time. It was 90% ice and 10% holes, loose snow was not to be found anywhere on that slope. Had to expect that though with the rain the past couple days. Not the best conditions for anyone to start skiing on. He did great though didn't fall not once going down the hill. Only seemed to fall, and struggled hard heading onto the lift. Not at the lift, but getting to it. It's uphill, icy, and he's trying to use poles that are too long for him to push, not to mention it's his first time on skis. (he used 75cm snowblades the past 5-6 times over a 2 year period that he's actually gone at all) So it was to be expected. It wasn't exactly easy for me either so I can see his troubles were very validated. Everyone was totally cool there tonight, even when Michael was holding people up by falling in the lift line or struggling to get up the hill. He was doing his best not to get in peoples way, and everyone was totally cool about it which was IMO just great! as I know how it is to be on the other side waiting to get up a slow lift and having some dumbass falling and crap all over the place. Michael did do a good job staying away from the features and didn't get in anyones way whatsoever on the hill... just in the lift line which was short being as it was a Friday and not too many people there before 6pm. They started firing up the guns in the terrain park and looked all ready to go on the Freedom Park run as well with all the lights on the guns lit. We bolted out at 6:30 as it was getting really crowded and not the place for Mike to be at. The guns were blowing all towards the lift anyway and it was colder than we had expected it to be to begin with. Amazing that BB can keep that trail going, and they are doing a kick ass job with what they have to work with. A little help from mother nature would be great for sure. Gotta give them mad props for keping it open for us to get out there this early. I've gotten 35 runs in and 2 days before thanksgiving... Holy smokes never would have thought it to be possible from someone who lives 110 miles away and has averaged less than 15 days a season for the past three years. I wanted 20 days this season and I'm well on my way to getting it thanks to Peak giving me such a good head start. Thanks JFBB for giving all of us PA skiers and riders a place to ski at this extremely early season.... mad stoked!! Quote
