I need some opinions from the well travelled peep's on here.

I'm getting something of a windfall from work as we are being acquired, so I want to take the family away for a kick-ass ski vacation. Now neither of my kids are expert enough (or big enough) to consider a powder only deal (like Monashee etc), so really we're looking for awesome slopeside housing at a major resort.

We would prefer a house (as opposed to a hotel), but it seems that these are not too common. We definitely want to be either slopeside or very, very close.

Best I can find so far is Majestic Properties at Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah.

Also, given that neither of the kids or my non-skiing wife have been to altitude before I would prefer not to risk a 10k base altitude.

OK, go with the suggestions...

Thanks

I haven't been to that many great skiing locations, but Whistler is great. Lots of condo rentals (not sure about houses). Tons of off mountain activities for your kids.

Go to Europe.I've been to Austria(Kitzbuhel) a couple of times and it's very cool. The history, culture, food and the amazing alps make for a never forget trip.

Had considered this but having come here from there, it seems strange to go back there when there are so many places to see over here.

Park City actually wouldn't be a bad bet for you. The village still is up there at about 7000 feet, but resorts like Vail are higher at over 8000 feet. There is a lift and a ski run that goes right into town, and Park City has a great vibe for families with great restaurants and a party scene that isn't known for being too raucous. I mean I'll always remember being eight years old and watching people do retarded things and screaming at the tops of their lungs at 2am in Whistler Village, but thats not what everyone wants on their vacation. Speaking of Whistler, it is nice too, but surprisingly there aren't a ton of ski in/out options available. Everything kinda operates out of either Whistler Village or Creekside, and they are both more base village type setups. There are some ski in/out houses over on Blackcomb, but they are a little more remote with respect to walking to restaurants and attractions.

I think Colorado would be your best bet for ski in/out luxury, but if you're worried about altitude it might be a problem, which might make Park City a little more attractive.

Are you interested in staying on the East Coast? What about Mont Tremblant in Quebec? http://www.tremblant.ca/index-e.htm

I checked, and they do have ski in/out condos (not hotel rooms), etc. I happen to love Quebec (though I have never been to the resort), and, the elevation is not like out west.

Here is an accomodation option: http://www.tremblant.ca/reservations/en/Mo...Sunstar.detail#

Steamboat - Very family oriented resort and a decent town to go with it. there are numerous homes available.

Steamboat is high on the list, but from their website it didn't look too good on the lodging front, but mainly just not enough information/detail. I've sent for more info, so this could be the right place. Other option looking good at the moment is Whistler, some really nice properties there (but mucho $$$ and maybe limited availability for this season)

There are several large property management companies that handle the rentals. use google to find them, then call, alot of places aren't actually listed on the websites.

Be sure to look at the cost of lift tickets and lodging and not just at airfares when determining cost. It might cost more for the airfare, but if the lift tickets are $84 a day, you can eat up the difference in air fare pretty quickly.

There is no way I would pick Europe over Colorado or Utah, because we all know the SKIING is better in the US, although the ambiance is usually better in Europe.

Actually I'm glad to see Sib chimed in. I rarely mention it in my travels because the mountain is a little smaller than some of the more well traveled destinations out west, but Whitefish is right near the top of the list on the favorite vacations my parents took me on. While they don't have crazy steeps, the terrain variety is great and there is something for everyone. I don't know how much the town itself has changed in the past 10 years, but when we were there it was still a very small western town feel. Gun racks in pickups, large mounts, great food, etc... We took Amtrak from Seattle and it was the coolest thing ever when I was like 12 years old.

With that in mind the ultimate family trip might be:

Fly into Seattle. Eat a great seafood meal. Catch train to Whitefish, Montana. Book a sleeper cab (get separate one for kids so as not to hinder your mojo) and stay up late with some wine and watch the mountains go by in the moonlight.

Catch taxi up to Whitefish Mountain Resort. I think the train got us there in time to ski but its been awhile so I'm not sure.

Ski and take advantage of some of the activities like sled dog rides and other things.

Leave from Whitefish or take train back to Seattle.

Thanks Sib, some interesting ones on there, will definitely be looking more closely at those.
